Working abroad tax free

If I were to take a 10 month contract in the middle east starting on the first of April and remained out of the country for the remaining 2 months of the year, would I still have tax free status in the UK?

If you remain outside of the UK for a full tax year (excepting the permitted return periods), then you should be able to obtain non-UK tax residency status for that particular tax year. That means any income earned in that tax year will not be subject to UK tax - although it might be subject to the taxes charged in that country.
