Greatest Gangster Movies Ever
Discussion
Guys what would you say is the greatest gangster movie of all time? I would have to say Goodfellas. It's blend of realism, fantastic acting and soundtrack puts it ahead of the Godfather for me.
Other notable mentions are:
The Godfather 1 & 2
Donnie Brasco
Carlito's Way
Casino
City of God
Gomorrah
Any mentions?
Cheers

Goodfellas is probably my favourite too.
I'd add Once Upon A Time in America to your list.
Suprised I left that out! Great film.I'd add Once Upon A Time in America to your list.
Great score too;

most already mentioned but Heat has to be in the top five.
I saw Animal kingdom the otherday and that is pretty good. It probably has one of the most uncomfortable unsettling scenes in any film for me. Whilst on the Australian vibe the Bra Boys is worth a mention.
Sexy beast has to be on there to represent the british contingent. (ETA the Krays also within the British genre)

Might be being a bit of a pedant but I would class Heat as a crime film and not a gangster one.
There is a difference - honest!
You may have a point there but either way it is a damn fine film. How about The Town? i suppose that'll be crime again, worth a watch tho. There is a difference - honest!
Pulp Fiction? That is based around a bunch of gangsters surely.
I disagree about Once Upon A Time In America. I watched it recently for the first time as I had it down on my list of 'All Time Classics - Must See' and was hugely disappointed with the over-long & turgid piece of self indulgent film-making that unfolded.
The more recent offerings of Casino, Goodfellas, City of God, Mesrine, Donnie Brasco, Gomorrah (even if I did have to read the Wikipedia entry afterwards to figure what the interlocked stories were actually about), etc have it beaten into a cocked hat as far as pace and narrative are concerned. I mean [SPOILER ALERT!], the ending with the dumpster truck - That's it? I was shouting at the TV...
It was almost as over-rated as that other 'classic' I finally got round to watching: The Deer Hunter. Russian Roulette scene aside, I ended up watching most of the second half on fast forward it was so dull.
For a more recent home-grown effort, can I recommend 'Rise of the Foot Soldier', based on real events. Not the budget of some of the others but uncomfortable watching at times.
