So I just watched TRON: Legacy and didn't really get it.

Is there anything more to it than guy goes into digital world, finds dad, finds girl, comes back out with girl while dad saves the day. Seems like something from Jonny Quest

I haven't watched the original Tron, so I am unsure if I am missing something from that.

You are missing the point. I watched it three times as I enjoyed it that much, and kept noticing more details each time.

If you don't like the plot, I advise you don't watch movies. Most of them have a plot that's been done 1000's time before.

Well, I'm approaching it in the guise of

"hehehehe! Tron! Heheheheh!"

The visuals and sound kept my attention - so I did enjoy watching it.

But after that ...

Since you are such as expert, how about actually answering the question and letting me share in the level of enjoyment that you seem to have achieved from this movie.

As for the plot, it is what it is .... It's how extra layers are wrapped around the core that makes the movie.

Tron Legacy has a very similar storyline to Tron, so you do kind of need to see the original to really appreciate the new one.

I loved it personally. Plot is basically as you describe, but its the background info on why they went into the computer in the 1st place, who they all are, who the girl is and what makes her important, the fact that for Flyn he's been stuck there for generations, but in the real world its only been 20 years.
Oh and the freaking cool special effects and throw-backs to the original.

Watch the original before watching this

Thanks.

Too late for that. But I'll try to watch it now.

This reminds me of the original Tron legacy thread where everyone said how bad it was before mentioning they hadn't seen ther original and had no idea what was happening in it. I've always wondered why people watch sequels without seeing the original.

Is it a true sequel, starting off where the original stopped ?

The main reason why I didn't watch the original one is because I am not normally in the habit of watching sci-fi movies from before my birth - they tend to disappoint (with the very rare exception).

Lol, I'm sorry, what? It was only released in 1982. Alien and Aliens are superb sci-fi movies, as was Predator, Terminator, Robocop, just to name a few. I don't quite understand how you can think modern sci-fi movies are superior? How? CGI? The original Tron was pretty much the original CGI movie!

Not many modern sci-fi's are better than the older ones.

2001,
2010,
Outland,
Close Encounters of the Third Kind,
THX 1138,
The Abyss.
Inner Space
Aliens, and the others you mentioned. By dismissing early films you're missing out a lot!

Star Wars, Westworld, Metropolis, The Andromeda Strain, Solaris, Soylent Green, The Stepford Wives, Logan's Run, Capricorn One, The Boys From Brazil, Mad Max, and so on.

Most modern Sci Fi is ruined by excessive CGI and lack of plot. What makes Science Fiction good is that it allows the writer to establish an interesting framework to hang a good story around.

"Let's have loads of big explosions" is not a story.

Agree entirely. I don't think they really know how to do a good scifi anymore. The Matrix, dark city, and equilibrium being the obvious exceptions.

Damn.

Those are good movies - have seen most of them and enjoyed them. Noted a few to be watched in the near future. Didn't realise some of them were that early. They were sort of before I really got into my movies and so I hadn't really registered year of release/production.

But still except for 1 or 2, they are all after the year of my birth.

I like my stuff in HD, visual effects that are not too obvious - some of the early stuff don't deliver in that respect - Aliens, Terminator, etc do.

I will get the original Tron and give it a go. If I don't like it, I promise not to post here wink

When you watch Tron, just try and imagine you are 8 and this is about the most futuristic thing you have ever seen.

No such concept as HD then. However, the reason was that everything was HD as it was analogue film. Quality may have varied but it had the resolution.
HD only became relevant with home video being capable of storing the digital files required.

Can't believe you missed "Forbidden Planet" off that list.
