I have recently been looking for a new car to replace my Jag STR as the petrol is just killing me at the moment.

Getting around 18 mpg and its costing me about £600+ pm just to go to and from work a couple of times a week and to customer sites. With the mileage allowance I get at work it costs me money every time I go to a customer site (approx double what I can claim) and I cant claim going into the office.

So I have looked at most big ish cars I can think of around £10 - £15K and all I can find so far is cars that make me go 'Mehhhhhh' (or other slightly bored/sad type sounds!). I cant find a single car that excites me and it feels like I am heading into a territory of dull and boring cars and I am not sure I am ready to roll over and die just yet!

So the question is can you get a family sized saloon that is very economical (40++ mpg, the more the better I guess) that isnt as boring as fk!!??

Cheers!

The Elise S is both very economical and very exciting.

Not applicable here though

Sadly it needs to be the family car as well so large 4 door saloon.

I have always had fairly large high powered cars but the running costs are just getting out of hand nowadays especially with my new job!

I could just go for a nice sensible VW Passat or something but honestly it just makes me want to cry thinking about driving something like that........ (no offense to VW drivers wink)

The other thing is I am not sure if my stupid brain is hard wired to think that only huge cars that go stupidly fast and growl at you are worth having............

What about a SEAT Leon Cupra?

reasonable economy 30mpg+ if you don't hoon everywhere
5 doors (but not so you'd know it thanks to the cleverly disguised rear doors)

There's a diesel version too which will easily do 40mpg+

None taken wink I understand what you're saying, that's why I have an E46 M3 for the weekends!

As regards economical and exciting, for 40mpg+ it will probably have to be a diesel, but that's not a terrible thing: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2608397.htm

If you can live without the noise, the diesel is actually quicker than the petrol version.

Why not keep your current car for weekends and holidays and get a cheap 320d or X type d for work.

If you are very economical with the tyres, your driving will become very exciting. Wusses buy Pirellis, Bridgestones and Michelins. Nankangs, Linglongs and part-worn remoulds are for real drivers. Anyone who objects has aids.

Only the worst! The stuff with a Tesco Value label. The tyres and the aids.

Inflate one of the rear tyres to 15psi FTW.

Srsly though, a friend runs an Alfa 156 JTD and speaks very highly of it so that (or the later and heavier 159) may be worth considering. My V70 D5, whilst hardly exciting is comfortable and makes good progress - a colleague had one of the earlier 163bhp D5s remapped to around 220bhp which by all accounts went very well indeed and achieved better than 45mpg even with his lead footed driving.

Wouldn't that mean superior grip in rain and snow? You big girl.

I'm glad nobody took offence to that. I just recall that post the other day "if you object, you're as sick as them".
