Hi folks,

I've been busying myself lately trying to find some extra work whilst studying at uni. The search returned nothing, until I struck various places just this week. Anyway, people got back to me today. One place is a photocopying/printing shop, and the other a 'Financial Investment Office' - with around 5 IFAs, so a small independent firm. Different world I think you'll agree.

So, I spoke with the Photocopying guy - he was really nice, very impressed with my CV and 'confident we can sort something out.' So I am meeting him tomorrow for 'a chat.'Reckon I'd get it if I wanted it.

The IFA office was a different kettle of fish. I had an hour and half long telephone interview with one of the firm partners. The role is for an administrative assistant. I was honest throughout the entire interview answered all her questions etc. I made a good impression, she even said that my verbal skills were certainly impressive, and my CV and letters looked professional. Given that I have no financial background, and no administrative background - I'm not brimming with confidence, but believe I could fit the role well if I was supported in the beginning. I confirmed this to her, but every time I began to think 'I probably shouldn't be applying for this' she kept pulling me back in with lines like 'I think we could find a role for you,' and stuff like this. Anyway she is calling back to arrange a day for an interview and informal assessment of my PC skills. Its been ages since I used Excel, but apart from that I'm competent and know I could make a good impression otherwise.

So:

Shop - Laidback, easy work, that might be quite interesting. Its just above min. wage, which is no concern (I am student what can I expect) 20 hours per week. Relatively flexible, and I can work full-time in holidays.

IFA office - Will be a challenge. I am confident I could do the work, but I won't be 'easy' per say. Wage, she says will be negotiated. She has made no illusions that the work will be simple, and that I won't be pressured. I did have some aspirations to go into the Financial Sector, but remain undecided. I would have 10 hours, flexible depending on projects, per week and scope for more in the holidays.

I really don't know what to go for. I am finding it difficult to be honest with myself here, and the merits of each are tearing me. I have the interview with the shop tomorrow, and don't know if asking for time to consider it would be effectively giving it to someone else. Whats more if I do that I might not get the IFA admin job anyway! Any help from an outside mind would be greatly appreciated smile

Cheers
Jamie.

NOTE: Title should not read offers, rather potential options!

Only you can decide really but i would be weighing up the following:

1) Shop place would be more suitable for uni life (easy going, concentrate on study / partying etc...)

2) Financial place would be much better for your long term career, will be great on your CV regardless of what industry you end up in (showed you weren't a student laybout in a crappy easy job)

I was in a similar position when travelling in Oz. All my mates got fun / bar / backpacker jobs for minimum wage and had a whale of a time. I got a job in IT (my field), earned three times as much, got great experience and offered a full time sponsored position. It is still on my CV today and has impressed potential employers in the future.

However my mates had a lot more fun and really experience the truer Oz / backpacker experience while I just moved my old job to the other side of the world!
