...is to walk to work.

Now I appreciate that this isn't for everyone, as some of you have a longer commute. But I've seen many a 'what car' thread on here where folk have been asking what's suitable for a 2-5 mile journey to work.

I live four miles from my office (although I work from home much of the time) and have been guilty of using the car as it's the easy option. However it takes me about 45-50 minutes to get the car out of the garage, drive, park up and walk the remainder of the journey to the office.

Today I walked in door to door and it took me an hour and five minutes. There were the following advantages:

1) Saving fuel/tyre rubber/wear and tear on the car etc.
2) Exercise
3) Fresh air and the sun on my face
4) New Elbow album on my MP3 player
5) Zero stress - no unobservant fools, inconsiderate oafs, tailgating yoofs etc etc
6) Walking past and browsing at cars in the local Lotus and Audi garages
7) MILFs walking their kids to school
8) Many attractive young ladies in summery attire (have we had Tit Monday yet? wink )

So - to conclude, try walking. It may take you less time than you think and will certainly be more pleasant.

What do you think? Tempted? Am I preaching to the converted? Or is it not suitable for you?

I live in a fairly small town and there is one woman who drives an Audi A3 and her daily commute is, and i'm NOT joking here, 400 yards. If you put you're mind to it you could throw a stone from her house and reach her shop and she drives it every day. It would take, what 1 min to walk but for some reason she needs her car!

Me? Well, i wouldn't walk my 100+ miles daily commute, thanks.

I tried to walk to work last week.

I got to work and discovered that I needed to be at 2 meetings that had been called at the last minute, I walked home and got the car, haven't bothered trying again.

Ok! I work 4 miles away from home, but a the moment they are building sea defences where my shop is (work),
and the heavy lorries race back and forth all day along a small road ,so there is no way I will walk to
work. I can just see the headlines in the papers.

I could happily cycle to work, but fuel is nowhere near expensive enough for it to be worth the hassle.

I dont fancy walking, it would take me a lot longer, 15 mins to drive maybe an hour to walk it. I am however planning to give cycling a go..

Another possible solution: earn more money, buy a V8.

Or get a job closer to home and buy a V8.

Or move closer to work and buy a V8.

walking is not a complete solution. it is still only (equivalent) 670mpg for the average joe.
cycling is 270 mpg

now wind powered cars, that would be infinate mpg.

That can't be right. Surely cycling is more efficient than walking?

I would imagine the calculation is to do with Carbon Footprint, which when including building a bike would be higher.
