anyone suggest an all in one engine monitor system?
Discussion
hi guys my bmw z4m is pretty tuned up now....... 460bhp at the moment and soon to be in the lower 500 region, i REALLY need a solution for monitoring the different engine parameters, what i absolutly dont want is a million gauges tacked to my A pillar, or holes cut into my interior.
I need a small unit that can be discreetly mounted to allow me to monitor a number of different engine functions, boost, oil pressure, fuel pressure, Exhaust gas temp, water temp....... ideally water, boost and EGT and ill be happy with those three items.
i have been looking at the dynojet wideband 2 but i think thats more for data logging. Can anyone point me in the direction of a small in in one unit that will allow me to scroll through the different engine parameters, and view on it own little LCD screen. Any help with this would be much appreciated, if i cant work out a solution im going to have to go the gauge route which in a z4m with literally no space to mount could cause an issue!!

Take a look at what MoTeC can provide... Not sure if it'll be over complicated for what you're after though.

thankyou very much for the link, unfortunatly its seems overly complicated for what im after......
i was thinking a simple little device with it own little display that can monitor a certain number of engine functions in realtime, something that could be mounted very discreetly but stil be seen during track, hard use.

A friend is considering a OBD2 Bluetooth dongle to use on his Android phone.

Plenty of different makes out there.

Might i suggest that looking at many many diferent pages of info might not be the best way to go.
What i would suggest is find something that can drive a "big red flashy light of doom" that way when something gets too hot you know to slow down or stop before the contents of your engine decide to leave

jack .... now that seems decent.....
it would be perfect but its just missing a few important readings....
Definatly the type of thing im after though.
It has an xgauge option for adding extra gauges, you can add up to 25 extra gauges,it would be perfect but its just missing a few important readings....

I'm sure you could add exhaust temp or what ever else you needed to monitor.

I don't think you're going to be able to get the parameters you want from ODB, you'll need to add sensors for EGT if you haven't got them already..
Have a look at what Defi have to offer, they do a HUD if you really fancy it..
The Defi is a nice bit of kit, my friend has that in his subaru imprezza,Have a look at what Defi have to offer, they do a HUD if you really fancy it..
the Apexi FC power commander is tidy as well, my other mate uses one in his Mazda RX7, Does the job nicely.

OBDII gauges will only display OBDII data, EGT won't be included for one.
I have used Defi CR gauges in the past, a very good system, easy to set-up and wire to and they have a host of features including the recalling of data.

I have no experience of it so you might want to do a bit more research but their Defi-link Advance ZD is probably what you are after or something similar.

The only thing I can see it won't do is display boost but it will give a warning when a set overboost occurs.
As others have said if you want discreet then the best thing is to have warning buzzers or lights once a potentially dangerous event occurs, better than scanning gauges. The ZD above has custom audible warning points for it's inputs.
If you go for gauges then analogue scales are easier to scan quickly than digital numbers as less brain processing power is involved.
