Why are all new cars having lights on all the time, EU law?

Yes. It's been like that in the Nordic countries for decades. Supposed to increase visibility, which I tend to believe.
Until EVERYONE has their lights on and then our brain filters it out. There's a reason bikers are taught to ride with their light on. If everyone ignores that I suspect ther'll be an increase in SMIDSY eventsRich_W said:

This is what i thought.Remember when you saw a hi-vis jacket and instantly knew it was the police? Now it could be the street cleaner, road mender, crossing patrol or paperboy.
I just dont see the point of it either.
Does every new car have to have it by law? Or is it optional for the manufacturer. I assume you cant turn it off?
They look a bit odd but there's quite a lot of data showing that daylight running lights cut down the number of accidents. And anything that helps the disinterested general public drive a little better and not crash into you is probably a good thing.
WRT mandated features on cars, from next year the US requires all new cars to have stability control I believe, as well as tyre pressure monitors and traction control. Ugh.

Maybe in winter/wet conditions when daylight isn't great. However, I do not believe it helps in the middle of the day in nice weather like to day.If they can manage rain sensitive wipers, why not proper light sensitive lights - not these silly ones that come on for a couple of seconds and then off again

For a very good reason......
DRL's are visible (hence noticable) in your pereiphal vision, even if your not looking Junction type accidents have reduced quite dramticaly in EU countries where they were more recently made advisory/law.
That because there seems to be no law with regards led drls. Consequently they point all over the place and are brighter than the headlights. Maybe they wouldn't be needed if cars didn't have a pillars so thick you can lose a queue of cars in them.
I don't like them and am not convinced of their safety benefits. But you can't fight the EU and they're not going away. So I'm trying to force myself to like them.
LIGHTS ARE PRETTY - LIGHTS ARE PRETTY - LIGHTS ARE PRETTY
I drive a black car so I could benefit from some additional visibility. I could drive with the lights on but it would be better to wire some superbright Halfords LEDs into the ignition, that way I won't forget to turn them on.
LIGHTS ARE PRETTY - LIGHTS ARE PRETTY - LIGHTS ARE PRETTY
Those green lasers which burn through things, I might tack some of those on as well. Studies show they reduce accidents.

Until the majority of cars have them and the brain adapts to them . . . then we're back to the start again.DRL's are visible (hence noticable) in your pereiphal vision, even if your not looking Junction type accidents have reduced quite dramticaly in EU countries where they were more recently made advisory/law.
