On Sunday night, every single car at the Ituned meet was given a section 59. I was told if I attend another car meet in the next 12months my car will be confiscated! Is this usual?

I've always had the impression S59s were given for anti-social driving.

I drove my car in slowly, parked it, then drove out in gridlock until I could be inspected hehe its a unmodified diesel, I don't I could have been anti-social if I tried!

The police rightly gave a few idiots S59s (revving and beeping when in gridlock) but I can't see how taking every number plate and giving everyone a s59 could be fair. It seems they couldn't police who was doing what so just threw s59s everywhere laugh

At a guess I'd say there justification would be the entire meet causes annoyance. I didn't want to argue and antagonise the police as I wouldn't have been doing myself any favours.

It could also be worth mentioning the meet in question was out of the way of the public, underground, in a closed supermarket car park in a town center (so not near any housing)

Where was the meet? Did they have the approval of whoever owned the premises to stage the meet there?

Generally speaking you're at risk of a S59 if you are in convoy with multiple cars that are deserving of one. Might not be fair, but them's the breaks.
It was on private property and looking back at what happened I'm pretty certain permission was not given!

I take it this isn't out of the ordinary then. Looks like I won't be attending any car meets for the next 12months. I can't really risk loosing my car on a sunday night.

I've just read the article, I see how this is anti-social. Asda customers were being intimidated by the cars driving around and revving in the car park. The meet I attended was on a Sunday night where said supermarket had been closed for over 2hours!

It could be worth mentioning I didn't get a slip. They noted my plate down, I'd expect the s59 will be coming through the post.

So no paperwork. A couple of friends wern't informed they had a s59, I told them as the police told me everybody had one and proudly showed me the number plate list.

They could have gone next Sunday, not realising they had a s59, and had their cars taken. Something doesn't seem right.

F1rob that sounds like a good idea. But as mentioned, no slip and I've been told not to expect anything through the post!

To clarify, I spoke to 3 seperate police officers during the entire 2-3hour kettling inspection and they all told me we would be getting s59s.

The point I'm making is, it definatly wasn't one ill informed police officer.

The article pretty much sums up what happened.

Around four police dogs were also present (kept in the cages)

Once the police started the 1 by 1 inspection out of the door a few cars were revving and letting the cars backfire (you always get a few nobs)

I watched a policeman run over, pull a Fiesta Zetec S out of the queue and take his keys whilst giving the driver an almighty lecture about revving. I tried to tell the officer a N/A 1.6 Zetec S with a standard exhaust cannot backfire, non-suprisingly he didn't listen laugh

So, looks like my section 59 will be sticking and I can't go to any more car meets. As mentioned in the article, cars with a previous S59 were taken!

Well, here we have it.

"You have been driving in a careless or inconsiderate manner contraty to Section 3 of the road traffic act 1988? YES"

yikes

Section 3 of the road traffic act 1988 says:

Careless, and inconsiderate, driving. If a person drives a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place, he is guilty of an offence.

Just... Wow.

I've only just seen the thread is still going. I'll read through it properly tomorrow and decide if I'm putting pen to paper.

I wonder where this leaves the OP's opinion?
Well this turned into a well rounded discussion! After lots of confusion I take it I am innocent and should contest the s59.

I'll type up a letter tomorrow and find out who to send it to!

Edit: I've just read through the Zeeky v Von debate again and clap to you guys!
