Keep it short

As per title, 13 year old lad runs over the wife's year old Porsche for a dare while his mates egg him on a and video it.

Witnessed buy the guy next door, after a short search i found said lad and detained him until the police come, he admitted it.

There is dents over the roof and possible the bonnet so this is criminal damage.

The police man asked how i would like to deal with this ? saying that if has has no form then perhaps we just give him a slap on the wrist OR do i want to go the whole hog and put him in court.

He as asked me to sleep on it.

Find this bizarre to be honest, putting the onus on us on what type of punishment should be dished out.

Thanks for your replies,
Lots to think about.

The car is with Porsche now, they are going wash it and inspect the damage and give me a quote to repair the damage.

Yes it would be best to speak to the parents, however as yet the police have not come back to us since the indecent yesterday afternoon despite the promos of a phone call before the day was out.

To try and answer some of the questions,
The lad was quite, did not put up much of fight and was not "cocky" or "mouthy" i got the feeling that he knew he was in trouble.

I can not contact the parents as i dont know who they are, however this took place outside of our business (a shop) so one would hope that they would come and see us ? but i really dont hold my breath to be honest.

To be honest i dont hold much hope with the police contacting me, i believe it will be me who does the chasing here.

I have found the lad via Facebook and in turn have found his parents who look to be separated so the broken home bit is there.

I will wait for Porsche to come back to me with a quote and then chase the police if they have not contacted me first.

I know things like this happen in life, believe me i have had cars stolen, keyed, windows put in, house broken into, air con units stolen off the roof, workshop broken into ETC ETC ETC but at no point have i ever ever had any recourse, now i have actually caught someone it is a meek 13 year old.

Have you considered moving?!!
Like you Guy i commute to work, most of the mentioned issues occurred at work as did the incident yesterday. Home is a different area.

My point is the Police have never caught anyone either through lack of evidence or just because they "don't have the resources" this time we have someone and he is a 13 year old,

Even though we have had our fair share of crime i have never let it affect me, still have nice cars, nice bikes etc not flash just never let the thought of someone trying to take things from me or damaging them bother me, i just do my best to protect them.

Bit of an update

Police did come back in late on Tuesday, giving the sob storey “kid is really sorry” “lives with dad in council flat” “has been grounded for 2 weeks” despite this yesterday morning he was playing football with the same gang over the road from our shop and last night on the way home he was with a another older gang of youths! So very remorseful and defiantly grounded! NOT

Got a quote from Porsche and they can get the dents out of the roof but the head liner needs to come out total cost £372.00 so not as bad as we thought.

The police officer is going to take the quote to the parents and ask them to pay it. Let’s wait and see if they do the right thing, personally I don’t hold my breath.

Lol lol a bit extreme, I can guarantee you the police would have no problems prosecuting you though for it.
There is quite a bit about the incident that i left out, after i found the kid and got hold of him to restrain him all his mates were videoing me and saying i was assaulting him, a member of the public (school teacher) came over and was very concerned with the situation.

I explained the situation and that i had called the police already, she said ok but told me to calm down ! Anyways 2 more calls to the police yielded no one dispatched yet this is now 45 mins after i had caught the kid, 2 PSCO arrived on mountain bikes, it turns out they were responding to the school teacher phoning in and not to my 3 phone calls to the police!

To me it always looks like the police are on the side of the criminals.

Bit of a jaundiced view, if I may.

Do you have a full list of all the other jobs going on in your area at the time and the number of resources available to your local force to respond to your incident?

Basic triage makes what could be interpreted as assault on a young person more urgent than damage to an insured motor vehicle, whether you've detained the suspect or not.
As you will probably know, no i did not have a full list of the jobs but in reality how does that help me ? how about if the lad was say 16-18 and was putting up a fight are you saying i would have moved up the list ? or how about if this 13 year old had given me the slip or he has called his big bad dad ? what then ?

Thought I would do a small up-date.

So the PC dealing with it finally turned up after chasing him for 3 days Via 101 (no other means of contact) Turns out we have no crime number (101 says we must have) the reason for no crime number as “it is not a crime yet” according to the PC.

He looks at the quote from porsche and then says they will need proof the dent was not there before hand ! I swear you could not make this up.

Fortunately it was in Porsche for its service 2 weeks ago and as part of the service they check the car for damage and provide a signed job sheet, there was no damaged reported. Without this we would be screwed.

We are now waiting to see if the parents are going to cough up and pay.

Sorry been away for the F1 and not been on here.

The Wife is dealing with this now.

The car has been into porsche and been fixed and paid for by us.

The Policeman is trying to be the go between, he has taken it up on himself to try and resolve this without the kid getting a record by the looks of it, it has been very frustrating to be honest.

By the looks of it it is the kids farther that is being a bit of a Cock ! It is him who wanted proof the car was not damaged, he then wanted to see the Quote from Porsche which we gave him, then he wanted to see the invoice we had paid to make sure we had the work done!

He has now come back saying that he will pay but not for the car wash Porsche did when it was in to be fixed !! but the best bit is A: it was to wash the kid's foot prints off and B: it was complimentary !

He has also contacted Porsche to check we have had the work done, but due to data protection they will not tell him.

He is now proposing to pay in 3 installments via bank transfer which the wife has agreed to, i don't really agree with it, i think we have been more than fair and the lads dad is just dragging it out.

Lets wait and see what happens.

I will keep the thread updated as and when,
