Had a letter informing me I was caught doing 88MPH in a 50MPH area on the M62 Westbound heading into Liverpool the other week ... I think it may have been this camera https://www.speedcamerasuk.com/database/NWM/nwm047...

Am I right in thinking 6 points and a hefty fine (up to 175% of my weekly net income) is best case scenario but there is a chance I could be banned for a small period of time? I've never had any points previously or attended a speed awareness course.

Thanks for some of the replies ... both helpful and witty!

Annoyingly is doesn't tell me which camera it was but it looks like it was actually this one judging by the description https://www.speedcamerasuk.com/database/NWM/nwm047... I'll fill in the relevent documents and contact the guy recommended further up in the replies if he is needed. No previous convictions etc and being relatively young still I imagine 6 points will be way more favourable than a short term ban for insurance purposes.

It's safe to say I'm royally stting myself hurl

I got 6 points and £200 odd fine for the same speed on the A3
Was that in a 50MPH zone as well?

Yes.

I pleaded guilty by post and sent a letter along with it stating my job depends on being able to drive, main bread winner etc etc. I didn't have any other (current) points, so not sure if that helped me or not. I was prepared for a short ban to be honest!
There is hope then! Thanks FB

Thought I'd update this for others, I was summoned to court and chose not to appear in person with it being so far away and seemingly making no difference according to other posters in this thread.

I 'got away' with 6 points and a £568 fine for which I'm grateful. Being 24 and driving a high powered hot hatch a ban would have meant it would genuinely be impossible for me to get insurance. It's also a lease car (only 3 months old) so it's not as if I could have just sold it and downgraded, I'm sure the increase come renewal next year will be severe enough rolleyes

The fine would annoy me but not be the end of the world. Assuming it was income based what's your salary region if you don't mind me asking. Pm if you want as I've always wondered what a bit of fun is going to cost me these days On circa 50k. The points would surely cost you a few hundred extra quid a year for the next 5 years which would piss me off something rotten. The new speeding fine thing is a piss take. 88 in a 50 is nothing in an average hot hatch these days. A golf r will hit 100 in a quick squirt and if caught will cost you dearly for half a decade because dangerous. Apparently.
I have told my insurance so I'm covered and it has no effect until renewal whcih I'm sure will be substantial as I already pay £950 per annum!

My base salary is circa 32k so my take home is around 2k. They've obviously given me the fine right at the top end as I was so close to being banned, the fine itself was around 400, then 100 court fee and another victim surcharge fee! It's more the increase in insurance for me that will be the bummer! I was actually in my previous car (Fiesta ST) when I was caught, 4 days before the Scirocco was delivered and I didn't get the notice through until 2-3 weeks after the new one was delivered. I genuinely wasn't aware the speed limit had dropped due to lack of concentration, I can hardly remember the journey! I had a mate in the car and we were heading to Liverpool from Coventry having spent the best part of 2 hours on the M6 with the cruise control at 50 through the average speed and when I finally got off it I wanted to make some progress and neither of us noticed the drop from 70MPH to 50 as we would have been chatting. Annoying as it would have bene the highest speed I was traveliing the whole journey and it was just as I hit the 50 frown

The maximum fine is £2500. £400 is 16% of the maximum. Way off "obviously ... right at the top end." You were told on page 1 of this thread how the fine would be assessed.

Correct decision to deal with this case online / by post. Generally speaking, do not attend court unless you have to.
I've just went to page 1 of the thread and I didn't see/read your post until now! Thanks for taking the time to post, it's appreciated. I was actually discussing with my dad about potentially borrowing some money so I could get you on board as you were recommended on the thread by somebody else.

I made a few points when completing the plea such as I need to be able to travel for my job and that I'm a single mortgage/bill payer and a loss off licence would put my job at risk etc. I was honest and sincere without begging which I think helped my case.

Thought I'd update the thread to give others who were interested the outcome and I get a load of 'wise' men tellingme how I should have slowed down in time and saw the signs laugh

'The speed limit should be raised to modern standards'
'I've been shafted'
'It shouldn't have been a 50'
'I should have got away with just 3 points'

All would have been valid points to receive abuse but I've admitted to being in the wrong from the start and that I'm lucky to still have my licence. I hope it brightened up your miserable days anyway biggrin
