Car hit. Other driver drove off - got his reg number
Discussion
Sadly today someone bumped my car when I stopped for red light.
I got out of car and tried to get their details - and they decided to drive off.
I followd them keeping safe distance. Finally they stopped as they were blocked by another trafic so I stopped about half a lengh of car behind them.
They then proceed to reverse and hit my car. At this point in time I realised its safer to not to follow them.
I managed to capture their reg no. Checked MIB and car is surprise surprise not insured and not taxed, but has MOT till may next year.
Chances of car/driver being traced by Police are slim and I am on TP policy.
If I decide to fix damage myself - how would I report this to insurance company (as I assume I still have to report this)

Hi,
yes - Police was notified shortly after above happen (before I posted here that is).
I took pictures of damage and well - mended front bumper for now so I can continue to drive.
Its more to do how do I report this to insurer.
Way things go I wont make claim on own policy.
So is it incident notification or non fault non claim accident?
or DO I HAVE TO REPORT IT?

Post up the reg, colour, make of vehicle and general location - If someone else google searches for the car next time he does it, it will add to this 'history' and hopefully stand more chance of identifying the asshat
Birmingham, sparkbrook areaHe hit my back here https://goo.gl/maps/5aTzV18GXuz (I was stopped where bus is)
And then reversed into me here https://goo.gl/maps/w5Cjy9F2qgq (he could not turn right due to traffic)

Ok - went ot Police station to repor this and have reference number. Afterwards was informed that someone will ring me tomorrow as case is more serious than simple hit and run.
But lets focus on my initial questions:
1) Do I need to report this to insurance (Yes/No)
2) If Q1 answer is Yes how should I report this if I am going to fix car myself

Ok.
Reported as notification only. Described whole situation and was informed it is single notification.
Yes - I will take a hit during renewal, especially as I had 3 claims in last 5 years (1 now classified as fraudlent PI, one more hit&run where I claimed through own policy and one at fault).
Been to garage and they confirmed no structural/hidden damage.
We even managed to get bumper back on car and its holding ok as provisional repair.
Time to look on ebay for new bumper

Agree with others, I think on the occasion the police shall consider it warrants attention (if you can find one that's not been laid off)
Another idea; in this CCTV age, could you do a little of your own police work to strengthen your case? Go back to where it happened, and see if any businesses feature CCTV, then kindly ask them if they can check their footage for you?
I already been to place where it happen. No one got CCTV pointing out there. There was City Council camera some time ago but then religiois minority there made it switched off.Another idea; in this CCTV age, could you do a little of your own police work to strengthen your case? As per someone suggesting MIB - I have 3rd party insurance so not sure if I can go through this route.
As per damage to the car - I will have to replace front bumper, front grille and plastic insert. Total cost of used bumper, used grille and new plastric insert will be circa £250
And I know how to replace those bits (been taking bumper off couple of times on my own)
After provisional repairs bumper sits in place and from distance looks ok - only when you look from short distance you can see damage.
My next purchase will be a dual dash cam (and no - you wont see any of my fotage on internet)
