My building society want me to prove I am who I say I am.
They already have copies of my passport and other docs.
They ask me to go to a solicitor with my passport.
Why a solicitor & not my local building society branch is beyond me.
I go to solicitor with my passport and other docs to prove that I am me.
They write to the building society & confirm that they've seen my passport and I am me.
Cost £714..

I was happy to prove my ID, it just seems a lot of money to write a letter.

Can you post a picture of the invoice?

Would be interesting to see the cost breakdown.
^^^ This.

Post a redacted invoice.
There isn't one, as all she had to do was write to the B/S to confirm my ID & email me when done.

Are you saying your solicitor charged you without providing an invoice and break down of fees?
Correct.

I've not complained yet, all I've had is an email from the solicitor telling me the amount I'm getting from the B/Society less her charges of £714 [inc VAT].

why is the solicitor handling your money when apparently all they have done is an identity check
you are clearly missing out a huge chunk of the story
before they did this identity check did they by any chance handle about £700 worth of work ?
The B/S owe me some money & needed me to ID myself.
I don't have a solicitor so chose these as they are local. I was with her for about 15 mins.
She then wrote to the B/S to confirm my id. She has now received the B/S cheque and will pay me out less her £714 [inc VAT] fee.

If that is all she did then either she has made an error in billing, or she needs reminding of the code of conduct for all solicitors...

Did she outline any costs when you engaged her?
No, I didn't think to ask & she didn't mention the cost.

Nothing more to the story, that's the complete story.

A great effort but a mere 3/10 for this one from me.
I much preferred your tale about the supermarket car park camera incident, that I gave a solid 7.5/10.

Side issue, but this thread has got to be a wind up, any challenge to the OP around providing some proof is met with a stone wall.

As I said way back at the start of the thread, he has a history of this. Don't feed him.
I've kept away from the thread because I don't know why I'm getting slagged off here.

This is a copy of my email from the solicitor.
She says 'further correspondence'. That was an email from me to her to make contact after my meeting in her office to which she replied to acknowledge me.
This is the second and final email I've had from her.

They have done a lot more for you and you're avoiding answering that question. No solicitor will receive your money into their client account for a simple identity verification check.

Where have these funds come from? What other services have they provided?
I'll repeat yet again.

Santander owe me some money [where it came from is my business and not relevant]
To pay me out they asked me to go to a solicitor with docs to prove who I am.
I don't have a solicitor so chose one local to me from the 'net.
I made an appointment, went to meet Amanda with all my relevant docs.
This took about 15 mins.
Amanda the solicitor wrote to Santander to confirm my id.
I've only met Amanda once, the initial 15 min meeting.
They have sent her my money.

No more, no less. That's the whole story.

I would assume that solicitors don't handle money for free and for fun.

Therefore the fee is not just for "looking at your passport".

It may or not be reasonable for whatever other work they have done, but either way they have done other work and there's more to it than you originally suggested.
No other work done.

As I keep saying, all she had to do was confirm my id & write to Santander.

No more - no less.

DELETED: Comment made by a member who's account has been deleted.
I fail to see how my location has any bearing on this. Perhaps you could tell us more.
If you really must know, the solicitor is in Birmingham.

That's complete BS, the solicitor has your money in their client account, that does NOT happen in the simple ID verification scenario you're claiming.

You're also being very evasive about the source of the money. What it clearly isn't is some money sitting in an unused account in your name, mas you've led us to believe via omission.
>>>>>>>>>>>"That's complete BS, the solicitor has your money in their client account, that does NOT happen in the simple ID verification scenario you're claiming." ------ Well it did in this case.

Santander owe me money, where it came from is of no importance.

As I've said MANY MANY times,
They needed to ensure that the recipient is me, so they asked me to go to a solicitor with id proof.
The solicitor did that & reported to Santander.
She had no other things to do other than that.

I repeat:-
All the solicitor had to do was confirm my id & write to Santander. No other work was carried out

I'll say it one more time:-
All the solicitor had to do was confirm my id & write to Santander. No other work was carried out.

This thread seems to have gone horribly quiet??

Or is the OP in debtor's prison?

smile
The reason it went quiet is because I've been waiting for replies from Santander who previously said that they would settle the solicitors fee.

I wrote to them four times concerning this and received no reply. My solicitor wrote twice and also received no reply.

So I phoned them last week. They said that they'd not received any of my letters nor those from the solicitor. They agreed to settle my solicitors fee, which they did on Monday, and I picked up my cheque today.

I'm not interested in a breakdown of Amanda's fee, it wasn't up to me to settle it. But I was surprised at the amount of £714 for a simple ID check. Perhaps Santander asked her to do something extra without my knowledge?

I cannot understand why I've been given such a hard time...
