Going north from Kent.

Going through these today I was concentrating on the road and other traffic, not noticing the limit had dropped to 40.

I went through a 40 limit sign just over 60, as did a lot of others for that matter.

Do these cameras all work and are they one shot or average speed?

No excuses really but I wasn't deliberately pushing my luck, it was a genuine error.

Any info guys please?

Other than how to spell "Dartford" obv...

There are no variable speed limits on approach to tunnel. Advisory orange signs only. Speed limit is 60mph dropping to 50 about 3/4 mile before tunnel.
I go through tunnel at about 3.30am weekdays and the number of twunts obeying the 30mph advisory on a road 3 of us are sharing is laughable. Even passed one of our drivers who recognised my car and tried to have a go. Professional hgv driver!

These had red circles around them, mandatory therefore aren't they? They went 60, 50, 40, 60.

Nope. 100% orange advisory on tunnel approach. J4 to j2 has variable, and j28 to j30 the other way.
It may have been J4 to 2 to be honest. Though I thought is was later.

Easy mistake to make. I work in the area and 'do' the crossing 25+ times a week. I am sure variable speed limits are M roads only and J2 - J31 (and vice versa) is A282 so not actually a motorway.

I guess I am just going to have to wait it out, but I was doing well over the 40 limit posted.

I find variable speed limits quite stressful to drive through at times and that section seems to be worse than most. There are a lot of lanes, lots of people changing lanes and a lot going on. Of course that could be an argument for the lower limit, but trying to filter and be in the right place without accelerating isn't actually that simple all the time.

I had accelerated to clear an artic on my left and get into clear space when I noticed the limit was down at 40. I then braked which I am sure delighted the driver behind me no end.

Average speed cameras, you can just make the things out on the gantry
Having thought back, I seem to recall there were lines on the road. That wouldn't be consistent with average speed cameras, would it?

Disregard the lines, 100% average speed, mate at work fell victim a few weeks ago, and know quite a few that have.
How do they work out the average if the limit goes 60, 50, 40, 60 then?

They don't.

The average speed camera enforcement is placed so that the average speed monitored is in a fixed speed limit area.

If the speed limit changes then there may be a set of cameras within that fixed speed limit area.

The cameras at the traffic lights near to the tunnel entry are red-light enforcement cameras. You will get a ticket for running a red light if that triggers.

You may want to know that the entire tunnel length is also monitored by an average speed camera system in both bores of the crossing as is the bridge coming the other way. I recommend simply reading and observing the speed limit signs. Good luck.
So basically the average speed cameras become fixed speed cameras when there is a reduced limit?
