I am looking to sell my car that's currently sitting on a private road:

- MOT expired a few weeks ago
- Battery drained, so won't start (and so will be a challenge for prospective buyer to test drive)
- SORNed (so prospective buyer can't 'take it for a spin')
- Not taxed
- Not insured
- Not under breakdown cover (so can't get AA/RAC to come over and start up the car)

What would be the best way of selling it on without breaking any laws (and without being liable for buyer doing so)?

It's a pretty old car, with a fair number of miles on it so not expecting more than a few 100 quid for it, so would prefer to avoid MOTing it if at all possible.

Don't expect much for it unless it is rare/desirable (what is it?)

Call a scrap car collection company for maximum convenience - or eBay no reserve spares/repairs 'barn find' etc!
Yep, a few 100 is all I really think I will get. will try scrap car car collection co. - how much do they typically pay?

Tell potential buyers they will need to trailer it away.

If by chance you get it running,do NOT go for a test drive.
Thanks. I guess that would further reduce the attraction and the pool of prospective buyers, but will probably have to go for that option unless there's a better idea or sequence that someone suggests

It's basically scrap I'm afraid, so worth about £80 if it's a Fiesta sized car

You maybe lucky and get someone thats into doing up car's to take it off you for a bit more if they think they can make money on it

Best bet is to stick it up on a "Cheap car's for sale" page on Facebook in your local area

Put as much details on as you can to avoid messers
Thanks, I'm rapidly recalibrating my expected price as the responses come in on this thread rolleyes

Unless you find an Avensis fanboy needing a spares car,yes it's almost worthless as a non runner, non mot car.

Try the selling methods mentioned above,FB groups etc or weigh it in.
Any chance it will be worth more than scrap if I get the battery going so someone can at least drive it around and drive it away (obviously direct to a pre-booked MOT, after getting their own insurance and tax)?

A runner will always be worth more than a dead one, assuming the engine doesn't rattle like a bag of spanners.
ah ok, let me try that then, thanks. The engine is quite decent for the miles it's lived

Why not jump start it and take it for an MOT ?
The MOT may cost it much more than it's worth... and looking at the comments here, looks like even with an MOT it may not be worth much more

Any feedback on using Autotrader to sell this?

They have a free service for cars under a thousand, and I'm wondering if the people who look for cars on Autotrader might be easier to deal with than the eBay/FB crowd
