After catching 2 delightful guys stealing a catalytic converter red handed at 8.30 pm last weds evening it's made me think about the security for the remaining 6 vans I have.

All 6 vans are sprinters or crafters, the van of choice of the thieving scum, they are all parked in a gated yd, with 6 ft eye wall/fencing , security lighting, full cctv and all vans fitted with cat locks.

But still they decided to have a go, and got as far as getting one off the van and over the fence before I turned up and scared them off.

So, anybody any ideas what else I can do to keep them at bay, bar wiring the vans to the mains or sitting in one with a shotgun.

I've been thinking about getting 4 railway sleepers bolted together under each van, the vans simply drive over them and park when returning to the yd each day, the height of the sleepers stopping them getting under the van, and the weight of 4 bolted together should stop them pushing them out the way.

Any of you guys have vans, and if so do you worry about this, on speaking to my ins broker he says he gets approx 5 claims a day for stolen cats, one of my customers had 28 vehicles done a few weeks ago, cctv showed they were in his yd for over 4 hrs.

Welcome any other thoughts on what else I can do, at 2k plus per cat my nerves are a mess at the moment.

Thought about this, but was told you have to get the vans re-tuned , and then refit the cat when it's due an Mot, is this true.

All the vans have these fitted, included the one that was done this week, they simply cut through it with a cordless 4" disc cutter, lol, I may as well wiped my arse with the money I've spent on these, it would have been a better use of my money.

How do they get at them, jack up the van & slide underneath?
Nope, simply slide underneath, a sprinter is high enough of the ground, slide under the back, cut through pipe, then slide under the front, reach up and pop bonnet, open bonnet and cut it away from where it meets the turbo, using a cordless disc cutter, easy when you know how.

Thanks for all the ideas folks.

I've decided to start with to go down the sleepers under the van route, ordered those today, plus bollards to go behind the vans, hopefully stopping them just cutting handbrake cable and pushing van back off the sleepers, also having 3 large lamps fitted that will cover the whole yd.

I'm sure if they want them, they will somehow get them, but hopefully these deterrents will make them think twice.

Hate to upset you but they also smash the indicator light which allows them to open the bonnet catch and nick them from under the bonnet
They don't have to mess about with smashing things, I watched these 2 pull a 12 inch metal bar from coat, with a bend on one end, simply lie under front of van, reach up into engine bay on right hand side, just in front of air filter, hook bar over the bonnet cable, pull and bonnet pops open, 10 secs at most.

Sleepers came today, chainsaw ready to fire up tomorrow, I have a plan/drawing.

Well, the first of 4 "van cat guard platforms" is built and ready for action.

Have to say, it works really well, when van is in place you can't even get you hand under the van, let alone your arm and a disc cutter.

Only another 3 to build, lol.

It appears that the travellers have already infiltrated your property and are laying in wait.

Have you not spotted their vehicle next to your new construction?
One of my lads who works for me keeps his caravan in the yd, after all this trouble he is moving it tomorrow, lol.

how will you immobilse the van so they dont roll it back?
To roll it back you have to push it up and over the sleepers, the front of van is 3 inches from the fence, we tried pushing it from the back with 5 lads and it wouldn't budge up the "slope".

I think whatever you do, you can always think of a way round it, bar locking the van in a 6ft thick lead lined bank vault you will always be aware they can do something, just about trying to make it as hard as possible for them.
