I’ve just been pulled over and invited for a chat in the back of an unmarked BMW regarding my mis-spaced plate. I’ll sort the plate out later today and I think I passed the attitude test. What penalties do the PH hive mind think I am likely to face?

I heard that mis-spacing number plates is a crime punishable by death.
After the holiday we’ve had that would be a sweet, sweet release.

When i have had number plate issues previously they have always just sent me on my way with no further repercussions.
Fingers crossed!

Did your plate spell 'PLEASEPULL M3' ?
Apparently, but it hasn't for the last 5 years or so.

None if they didn't tell you they'd be reporting you or give you a fixed penalty notice. Sometimes a simple verbal caution is enough.
Look, I'm going to overlook your helpful and informative post just this once, but next time I'll be reporting you to the mods smile He said he'd reported it to headquarters, and they would decide whether it would be a caution or a FPN.

I'd be more worried about the taste police.

At the least the real police have tried to save you from embarrassing yourself further than you already have, though.

There's a very simple rule with mis-spaced plates: if you need to mis-space it, it's a st plate.
OK, but can I keep the air horns that play Colonel Bogey?

A truly heinous crime presumably due to the OPs fk the law attitude, vanity and sense of self of entitlement.

Picture or record of chavplate required.

Then at least the OP can feel slightly less guilty by supporting the brilliant C124PPY chavplate thread.
You're right, I'm a bloody menace me. A bona fide danger to society. I'm petitioning my MP to bring back the birch, it's the only language I'll understand.

Come on OP, post it up. You seem a good sport. Have seen some ste plates before, how bad can this “crime” be?
Are you mad? Do you know what could happen if I posted a picture of my plate? Criminal masterminds would clone it and use it in their organised crime syndicate, stealing 15 year old CR-Vs to order for the insatiable middle eastern market - they like their luxury motors out there.

On second thoughts, here you go. I know it's hooky and I'll take it on the chin, but I see a lot worse every day.

The floor is now open for the taste police to have a go!

Really? I hadn't heard about that - I've had a completely clean license for 30+ years, I'll be properly miffed if I get 6 points for a chavplate.

I actually put the properly spaced, BS-AU marked plates on for the MOT several months ago and decided they looked better, so I left them on. Trouble was I had only stuck them on with double-sided tape and they fell off after a while.

SecondBest, you'll be joining me in the CR4PPY thread if you're not careful!

I was relieved to see this bloke had a compliant plate, and therefore his vehicle is fully roadworthy, even if he was driving in bare feet...

And there's the issue. There are no degrees in this offence. It either complies or it doesn't. No surprise you're in the West Mids, though, Rob. I've seen more shonky plates in this area than anywhere else I've lived. Nice bike, if you've still got it, btw.
Thanks Pothole, as it happens I was just leaving Aberystwyth when I got pulled over, maybe they’re having a crackdown out there?

I now have a brace of RFs - a 600 and a 900. Must get round to prepping the 600 for sale as I don’t use it any more. Of course now I’m wondering about the legality of the plate on the 900 - it was on the bike when I got it, it’s a bit small and the font is a bit off...not quite italic but not the current standard. I’ll post a pic if I can find one, I’m sure it will provoke some more discussion!

Everybody, thanks for your input. Despite the plate I’m generally conscientious and law abiding, honest!

Edit: the correctly-spaced, BS:AU marked plates are now back on the car and will be staying on.

He can have at it now for all I care, the scales have fallen from my eyes and I have seen the light, no more shall my conveyance be besmirched by a non-compliant plate. Forgive me Pistonheads, for I have sinned...

The point has been well made that there is no grey area, the plates I had on didn't comply with the regs and so I have replaced them. The short-lived amusement value I got from the plates wasn't worth the inconvenience of being pulled over, let alone the cost of a FPN.

I've had a look at the plate on my bike this evening and I *think* it's OK in terms of dimensions & letter stroke width, but it doesn't have the maker's name or the BS:AU stamp. Having said that it's a 20 odd year old bike so different regulations might apply?

It's been an interesting discussion, perhaps some posters may have been using a bit of exaggeration or hyperbole to make their points - I really don't think I suffer from all of the personality defects that have been listed by some! XJay, you seem to have copped most of the heat in this thread, meaning I didn't have to, so thanks for that!

So right there we have irrefutable evidence of the Platees sense of entitlement, fkuck the law attitude and pretentious nature to consider.

Reasonable enough then to conclude then that mispaced plates are not just about a few millimeters outside the law on a rectangular piece of plastic and instead they're a clear reflection of the Platees attitudes and mindset simply because if those attitudes and mindset didn't exist within the Platee the mispaced plate wouldn't exist either.
There are profanity rules on this website, and a swear filter which automatically censors profanity. But you have wilfully mis-spelled a swear word in order to make the word appear, rather than the "censored" emoji. And, despite the word being spelled incorrectly, it is eminently readable.

OP here, just to close this off my fixed penalty notice arrived this morning - £100. No more dodgy plates for me!
