Pulled over but then told not to worry!!!!

So on my way home late last night over a bridge to a slip road to join a motorway. I noticed x5 police sat on the bridge. Went passed at probably 45 the limit is 40, into a Roundabout and exit on to a slip road. Yeah I did boot it down the slip road up to 80-85 joined motorway couple of lorry’s lane 1 few cars lane 2 probably doing 65 ish so moved to lane 3 still doing 85 speedo.
Out of nowhere see a car from lane 1-3 come zooming up behind me tailgating. Sometimes in this situation I do accelerate if I thing someone is being an idiot but late at night could see it was an X5 from the headlights so I moved over suspected it was that x5 I had just seen. Car came past slowly yep it was the police just as I thought. They dropped back again followed me for 4 miles then pulled me over.
Officer came over asked my name didn’t ask for proof then said ok not to worry we were looking for a silver Saab. Off you go.

Routine check or were they following me to see if I would go faster on motorway.

I moved over as soon as I could. No way they could have seen me boot it down the slip road they would have been turning around to come my way. On the motorway I was in lane 3 overtaking saw the X5 dart from lane 1 to 3 in my rear view and on me quite quick so I put my indicator on to show I will move over when I can. They didn’t overtake straight away so I knew it was the police low and behold when they did pass me it was them.

I found it more strange he didn’t ask me for driving licence, pulled over stopped for maybe 30 secs max then ushered away.
