A few queations for the legal gents
Discussion
1- many thanks to those who have advice on how my son could get his hands on his Overseas Birth certificate. To BV- I've got a source of how to get one ,but I'd prefer to do it via PM.
2)- Now that son has a certified copy of his BC, he's Trying to get get a driving licence to help with his work prospects. DVLA will only accept the original. Given that son ( and I) have spent circa £150, and a lot of hard years to get this far, is there a Legal way to get a legally certified copy of his BC.
3) - Next problem son has come up against is the fact that DVLA require a UK birth certificate. FFFS. His BC states his parentage as Father- UK born citizen. Mother, likewise, both holding a UK passport at time of his birth.
Any advice welcome.

As a British citizen (by birth), who was born abroad, my birth certificate was a consulate-issued one and issued in parallel with the Norwegian certificate.
When I applied for my first driving licence the original was lost. So I applied to the GRO for a copy, got it two days later and submitted that to the DVLA without any incident at all.

I know zip about DVLA processes, but lots of people who were born outside the UK have UK driving licences. I would try writing a sensible and clear letter to DVLA with a copy of the birth cert.
BV- many thanks. Any suggestions of the pertinent points to include. I've had a conversation with DVLA where they were not aware that someone born outside of UK could have British Citizenship . And another point that arises, is -is there a process in UK whereby a NON UK Brth Cert can be copied and certified and be accepted as a legal document. How and why are the DVLA asking for a British birth certificate ?
I assume you are just after a driving licence
The only mention of birth certificate is that you CAN use it ..but there is a list of other methods
https://www.gov.uk/id-for-driving-licence
and the second page of the online application for a provisional licence has a drop down asking for country of birth
( edited as i cannot read ! )

Chozza- he's applied on line ,but he's not recognised on gov.uk ,as he's not got a Gateway account . So he's been sent a paper application which stipulates a UK birth certificate. The form states that only a UK birth certificate is acceptable.
He's entitled to
Vote,
Be a holder of an National Insurance Number and receive State benefits.
Entitled to receive (as free as it can be) NHS treatment ,with his own NHS number
And included on the voter's role.
How much more British does one person need to be to qualify for a UK driving licence?

Who me ? He's applying for a Provisional licence ?
Im still not seeing anywhere that is asking for this information - nor is it asking for a government gateway id ?
At which stage is his online application failing ? before or after the payment screen - applying as a fictional north korean - im getting as far as the payment screen with no issues !
Have you actually watched him try to apply .. is he using the legit site.

Please stop the nasty replies. he's applying as a British Citizen , entitled to abide in the UK, with entitlement to full UK benefits / voting rights and with FULL UK documentation . Not as you Assume some third world immigrant. He did apply ( and was accepted ) by the UK Army in is teenage years, so his Citizenship /right cannot be doubted.
Sorry , its not a nasty reply - i was just trying the most obscure option i could think of to see if i got the same results as you
I'm just not seeing anywhere in the application that is asking for either a government gateway id or a birth certificate! Even a NI number is only an option.
I have helped Chinese guys i work with apply for the their driving licence and they have not had the issues you are experiencing
Try it yourself https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving...

I don't think it was nasty, I think what the point they are trying to make is put the country of birth as the correct country of birth and not the UK then he should be able to use any birth cert not only limited to a UK one, he will still get a UK licence?Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
