Going to keep it simple and some advice if possible please-

New manual car purchased

Gearbox was not brilliant out of the box , selecting gears is not great at lower speed and reverse can be a pig. Almost feels like the clutch is not disengaging.

Advised to let it all bed in which I was happy to do.

Still not great after 2k miles so when passing the dealer one day dropped in and one of the mechys went for a spin, he agreed and advised we need to book in for a week as the box will probably have to come out.

Car goes in and I am now being told it’s a how they all are and that’s it.

So we have gone from the master tech saying the box has got to come out to it’s fine just put up with it!

Thoughts please?

The sales manager has an identical car that they are happy for me to drive and feel.

So I am not doubting them, but my point is if their master tech felt the box was faulty why should I put up with it?

The issue of wether 'they all do it' is not relevent because you raised a concern about the suitabilty of the car early on shortly after purchase with the seller.

From that point on at the request of the seller you allowed (quite rightly) an analysis to take place by using their experts (not your own) who remarked that there was indeed a question over the operation of that gearbox. To such an extent it would require removal.

A conclusion was then reached by the seller that in fact all the models had that defect.

As you raised your concern about the gearbox early on, that is the point that counts, just because all the cars have that defect does not mean you cannot expect redress.

If other people wish to drive around in cars with defective gearboxes that's their choice.
This is pretty much how I see it,

Gonna give them a call tomorrow and try and get this sorted.

Thanks for a sensible reply

I will keep the thread updated.

No manual available to test anywhere at the time and just assumed spending £30k on a car would mean you are able to change gear easily.

Its not just a case of I don't like how it changes gear its a nightmare!

My Mrs *really struggles to get it into first, second etc....

Is it better if you double clutch?
It is indeed, something I was used to when working with tractors built in 1970 but not in our 2019 car!

When I reported the fault I told as this to the dealer but they don't seem interested in my thoughts.

I am not going to comment on the make etc.... as I don't want to go down that route yet.

Lets just say its not a bargain basement Chinese manufacturer!

Bit of an update,

Mrs MattyC got stuck in a car park as the car would not physically go into reverse,

Video of the incident sent to the dealer with the threat of sending onto others,

A hey presto new gearbox going in next week!

If it does not improve then we will be rejecting. I am giving them one more chance as we love the car and everything it does for us just need it to go into gear!

So I am back again and guess what.....

Stuck going into reverse 3 times today! Luckily I was driving!

Mrs Matty C is now adamant she won’t drive it again (majority of the time it’s her the sprogs on board 3 and 7 months) and is paranoid about getting stuck somewhere.

I am a bit sick of it to be honest any ideas my rights to reject as the car is now 8 months old.

Its a breed of VAG that's all I am going to say...……..

The only way to get into reverse is go for 2nd as said above but even that's a struggle to be honest.

When the work was done it had a new clutch and gearbox apparently and it has been fine for 1000 miles but not playing ball anymore.

She is scared stiff of driving after the last time she got stuck in a car park in it.

Reading online if the fault was present when new I should of have no issue rejecting after the 6 months has passed and as they had in twice for the fault when it was only a month or so old I should have no problems.

I am going to give them a call today and see what happens.

Bit of an update,

Came to a very reasonable agreement with the manufacturer and dealer in the finish and brought home an identical car today with the addition of a DSG box.

So the moral for me is if you know your rights keep fighting as you will succeed in the end!
