Hi,
Ive been looking for a while now (2 years) at getting myself a Corvette if I get taken on after my apprenticeship (September).

I was initially looking at C5s, with my ultimate aim being a Z06.

But ive recently starting considering spending a bit more to get a base C6.

Price aside, what areas do each car excel over the other? Does anyone have experience of both?

The car in question would have to be manual.

Thanks in advance.

I had a C5 Z06 and it was a strong performer and good handler but was ruined by the gearbox.
Though not a terminal issue,, being 5'6", the shifter was not ideal for me and the quality of the change was abysmal, even by tractor standards.
The long and the short of it was that when you wanted tp press on and swop the cogs down, like when approaching roundabouts, it was far more a chore than a pleasure....and that was with a shorter throw Breathless shifter.
I sold mine, mainly as I needed 4 seats but my Mustang's gearbox is far, far better and that is far from being great.
A friend of mine still has his C5 Z06 and seems to find it OK so maybe with the seat further back, it might be easier.

I am told the C6 gearbox is better but as I never liked the styling, I never bothered trying it.
That's the sort of insight I was after.

Thank you smile

Anyone else?

A vague question but can I ask what you think is a reasonable price for an average condition C5 Z06?

Suitably vague answers are accepted smile

Wow
Those 2 look amazing.

If any C5 owner based in the South of England would be willing to show me over their car and generally put up with me asking obvious questions for an hour id happily hand over a crate of beer. biggrin
Likewise, if anyone reading this is thinking of selling between now and December please let me know.
Since posting this ive decided im interested in any manual C5. Z06 preferred but only if the price is right.

I've a manual C5 (non Z06) and am based just off the M25 near Dartford, happy to show you round mine? It's not stock but not far away so you'll have a good idea on what to look for.
I would really appreciate that, if you dont mind?
Im free on the 13th, 14th and 16th of June all day, if any of those work for you?

I tried PMing you through here but you have it turned off. Message me if you want smile

I imported the car in 2004 with 12k miles, now on 63k. The only issue was the abs module threw a warning light in 2007. Apparently It's a common fault with the Bosch unit on lots of cars that have it. I sent it to a guy who replaced a faulty diode and it's been fine since. Apparently it's always the same diode that goes as it needed to be beefier. Apart from that it's been utterly reliable.
That's quite a testimony!

One of the biggest draws of the corvette was that I kept reading about their impressive reliability when compared to contemporaries.
Nothing worse than a fast car that doesn't even run properly.
(and the MPG isn't half bad either)

Ive just got a quote off Adrian Flux for £650 ish for the Z06 which is a price im very happy with.
I ran a second quote for a standard C5 and the price was identical.

Thats not bad at all and part of me had assumed i would end up with a normal C5 due to insurance cost alone.

Edited to add : im 26 years old.

Further edit : i also paid for CCCUK membership.

Any updates on Z06 ownership OP ?
Many.

I love it.
Initially I found the LHD difficult for B road overtaking and even changing lanes on the motorway/dc but have since gotten more used to it.

Ive done just under 800 miles when insured for 3000 pa so I need to be careful.

Before buying almost everyone was sceptical and suggested cars they thought would be more suitable, but ive taken my closest 5 car friends out in the car and had nothing but extremely positive comments (bar the "I couldn't drive LHD" comments)

The car has two issues. A worn anti roll bar link which I have bought but just need to fit (£60) and the very common fuel gauge not reading when tank is above half.

The number of looks from others is weird in some respects but rather nice in others, sitting in traffic makes me feel rather uncomfortable as though im an animal in a zoo.

All in all, I love it and can see me keeping it for a long (for me) time.

I just wish my garage was a bit wider as its rather tight.

The lowest MPG ive seen is 17 US mpg (22 UK mpg?) on a 6/10th hone around the Malvern hills
Highest is just over 30 mpg US (36 UK?) with max effort on MPG.
Mind blowingly good really.

The fuel gauge issue might be down to cheap fuel.
Sulphur i believe builds up on the sender and stops it working correctly.
Good fuel and an additive cleaner might make it work again.
So I hear.

Im on my second tank full with additive now. Hopefully it will fix it.

What was symptom of anti roll bar link? I noticed a creaking from rear end of mine when turning tight corners, had wheel bearings checked and they’re fine so was wondering where next to look..
