I’m considering buying a Caterham 7, primarily for track use.
Ignoring cost, are there any reasons not to buy the 620R.
Have owned a few super cars and driven quite a few on track.
Obviously I’ll test drive first but would appreciate any points of views from 620 owners.

Thanks Andyj007,
You are right, lots of niggles reported on the 620R.
I’ve picked up a few on YouTube too, can it really go through a tankful of petrol in 30 minutes? That would make a Track Day pretty awkward with repeated fill ups.
Questions around the longevity of the gearbox and the awkwardness of the racing clutch too. I’ve experienced the latter and could get used to it, but could do without the gearbox needing constant attention.
All in all, I may switch my focus to the 420R, but I’ll continue my musings and investigations!
I haven’t even driven a Caterham yet, so early days!

Thanks to all, especially Clarkey. Helpful to hear from a previous owner. The palaver of extra fuel cans and the noise issue on track days might put me off the 620. I was intrigued that you clearly rated the car, but wrote about it in the past tense? Why did you sell and what did you buy to replace it?
Is there a ‘sweet spot’ in the Caterham range where performance, reliability and drivability all converge? 420? 360?

LOL your comment on the sweet spot made me laugh! That’s why I was looking at the 620 in the first place!
A couple of practical question if I may. I have two 20L Jerry cans (used for my lawn tractor) so understand the cube. Did you manage to stow these in the car for a Track Day?
Does the rear exhaust solve all TD noise issues?
Thanks for your help.

Thanks, much to consider.
As soon as I posted, I realised you must have used a trailer.
I’m actually pretty close to Goodwood, so that’s my preferred venue. Did your other Caterhams qualify for their quiet days?

That’s helpful, I’ve just noticed that all GRRC Track Days are Category 2 105db.
I’ve never given much attention previously as my E-Type and TR6 qualify consistently.
The number of Caterhams that attend suggest that they do too, although there may be some survivor bias, in that I don’t see the cars that may not qualify!
Appreciate everyone’s input, I vacillate between 420 and 620, next step is to get some test driving underway.

Thanks for that jm doc, do you find it necessary to trailer your 420 to Track Days and do you have to carry extra fuel?

Gasoline, thanks I suspected as much, but can you stow these in the car or do you need to trailer it?

You could fit 2x 20L Jerry cans on the passenger seat if you wanted to.
You can to think smart when packing, but you can squeeze many things in.
I used to live in Petersfield, so runs to Goodwood for different occasions were frequent. Nice part of the world.
Thanks for that. I’ve got 2 x 20L Jerry cans and have just bought a 5L version. I’ll see what fits.
At my last TD my nephew left me running “on vapours” and on the way to the local petrol station, only a mile away, I hit unexpectedly heavy traffic. It was stress I could have easily avoided with a spare can (or two). We live and learn!
Thanks for everyone’s input, much appreciated.
