Hi everyone, I currently have an '02 Octavia VRS which is great, I have had it 2.5 years now and fancy a change. Criteria is it's replacement has to be a family car, has to be a bit different from the run of the mill and has to be nicely specced and fairly nippy when needs be. I stumbled accross these whilst browsing the classifieds and would love a bit of PH knowledge on them, over to you guys!

I need a large boot hatchback due to having a dog with another one on the way, the Octavia has a huge boot which is perfect but the cabin is starting to feel too small in the back. I've looked into estates but can't find any that tick all the boxes with most of them being a bit ordinary. I chose the Skoda over the equivalent Audi or Volkswagen as it was slightly left field and under the radar of most people hence the thoughts of the Zafira for the same reason.

E.T.A i'm open to suggestions though, come on guys tempt me.

May be useful to know that eh! Ideally around £4-4500 but could go to maybe £6-7000 for something I couldn't live without!

I like the saab out of those three, even that is a bit ordinary.

Ah but the rs4 IS the rarer choice, which is what I like. Just to try and give you an Idea of a few past cars and what i'm looking for at the minute , first car was a Fiat cinqucento sporting, but as they were pretty common to see in normal spec I had to have the abarth model, next up I fancied a phase 1 106 but thought the xsi was too normal so bought the rallye version, next up I fancied a Polo GTI but kept seeing them everywhere so bought the Lupo GTI instead. I don't mind 'normal' cars, it just has to be the none obvious model.

Octavia isn't a bad suggestion but as I've got the older model I'd like to try something different. Plus, they have become very popular.

This.

I hired one for a three-week trip across France - had two bikes and luggage so wanted something large.

The Zafira was abysmal, there is no other word for it.

In summary:
- No confidence in the corners whatsoever, wet or dry
- Wallowy soft, rolling, hopeless suspension. My OH at the time asked if we were driving a waterbed, so god-awful was it in the corners.
- Dull, dull, dull, dull
- Tiring on long drives due to bad driving position no matter how I adjusted the seats.
- Powered by four harnessed children - slightest incline would see me changing down, down, down, and screaming the engine. Sorry, that should be screaming AT the engine.
- Did I mention dull?
- Infuriating indicator controls that don't switch off when you want/expect them to, and end up indicating the other way when you furiously try to switch the fekkin thing off
- Dull to look at, nothing interesting of note whatsoever in its aesthetics - the design engineers studied at the University of Dull, and used a photo of John Major for added inspiration
- It has fold-down seats

In summary of the summary:
Avoid, at all costs, or you will end up dragging your fingernails down your eyeballs in the apoplectic hate you will feel for this truly awful vehicle after just eight and a half minutes of ownership.
Was it the GSI model?

Genuinely don't understand this mentality.

So you would rather have a car that offers a worse driving and ownerhip experience because you're primary motivation is that it's unpopular?

Good luck with that. jester
Seems to have worked perfectly fine for me on previous cars.

Not under the radar as such, I like the Zafira GSI due to it being the none obvious choice for the Zarifa's main target buyer. VXR version is a good option, I didn't realise they had come so cheap.

Likes a drink, though. Will be thirstier than an Octavia vRS.
Not a fan of the ford either, any more fun estates to suggest?

Not that it really matters what other people think, but whenever I see a 'sporty' people carrier, e.g Zafira GSI, or the Ford one with the 2.5 engine (S-Max, G-Max?) I genuinely feel pity for the driver, as if he is a bit of a petrol head, but life + family got in the way of his dreams and he's had to compromise.
With family life being FAR more important than cars, I'm happy to compromise. I had a bog standard MK5 golf before the octavia as I was offered it cheap, I sold as quick as possible for a profit and went for the Octavia, great family car with okay performance. Brilliant compromise in my eyes. I just fancy a change now but still want something 'sporty' and family/dog friendly.

If it helps matters our second car is a Clio 172 which I get great pleasure driving. The main car is my daily, hence wanting something a bit 'pepped up' whilst still retaining the family needs.

Now that I've justified myself, let's have your suggestions.

That's lovely. I am, however, only 31 who looks around 25. I don't think it would suit. I'm an awkward bugger I know..

One child, one Labrador and a cocker spaniel on the way. Main commute is only 14 miles a day with regular trips from hull to Huddersfield thrown in.

I need pictures, all from that list aren't lighting any fires, the v70r is probably the pick of the bunch.

The stages is one ugly duckling isn't it!

Do you have any decent interior shots of your zafira ? I was looking at the black ones, I do love a clean black car.
