DayZ Standalone help
Discussion
Right,
Im going back to PC gaming this weekend. I've seen loads of DayZ stuff and its half the reason im going to PC. firstly, standalone or dayz mod based on arma 2?
Im assuming standalone is better as its newer but ive heard different opinions.
Secondly I need tips for getting started. It seems ridiculously complicated, are the controls complicated? does it need hours of setting up before you play?
Is it just a case of dive in and run around like a noob but i'll get the hang of it? How do you find your way around, do you need to just find a map and compass and go from there?
Any hints/tips?
I guess as i'll be looking to get Arma 3 also they are controlled the same?
Any other games that are a must? I'll be getting CS:GO, BF4 I have on the Xbone so probably wont bother. Does day of defeat still exist? used to love that! Im going to try to get my old steam account going....

Thanks for that! Are the controls fairly easy to pick up? Frankie's videos got me back into it!
I just found my steam login details... Last logged I in 2009!!!
Still, now I found my details it means I have my old copies of Half life. Was hoping Day of Defeat would be upgraded but sadly not :-(

Does team speak work outside of the game? They wouldn't hear us in game chatting via team speak is what I'm getting at.
How do vehicles work btw? My understanding is that they spawn randomly all over the map but normally broken in some way. Needing a wheel, or a rotor assy etc.
You then need a toolkit, and scavenge the parts to fix?

I'm a big fan of DayZ, and have been playing it since a few months after the mod first appeared, which must be around two years ago now IIRC.
The Standalone is a bit more polished than the mod, but is still very much in development, and updates seem to be coming slower and slower in recent months. Apparently they will be moving the game over to a new engine, which should be interesting. Its a buggy game though, and despite looking much better than the mod, its quite an empty experience IMO, with little to do beyond getting enough food and drink to easily support yourself. My friends and I have given up playing it at the moment, we're waiting for some serious updates to appear, such as vehicles, better weapon physics and just a bit more to do.
The mod has a lot more variety going for it, with people creating new maps, modes and content all the time. It has its own quirks and bugs, but I've had a lot of fun there, especially on the Epoch modes, I'm a sucker for base building and love doing this. Aircraft, helicopters and vehicles all add up to give the game more fun.
Personally, I'd say that if you want the full DayZ experience, play the mod, as it has everything that makes the game good there already. The Standalone isn't bad, but feels hollow, and well, you never know what lies ahead for it; it may become a fantastic game taking all the aspects of the mod into a better game, or it could just get dumped by the developers and not get much better than it already is. I don't think Standalone will become any better than what Vanilla DayZ was.
TBH I half tempted with the mod as its free. is it more complicated? it certainly looks it.The Standalone is a bit more polished than the mod, but is still very much in development, and updates seem to be coming slower and slower in recent months. I had an issue when trying to download DayZ commander. Every link I clocked tried to take me to an advert? Is it the bit that says 'install now' rather than download?
Am I just going to get crazy amounts of virus's?
P.s. When I say start up the ARMA 2 etc. is it just go into game a start say the first mission then quit?

any experience of this: http://dayzlauncher.com/
Or would it work via the six mod thingy? : http://withsix.com/
Im very wary of the Commander. appears its full of malaware now, I havent just built a PC to spend ages getting rid of st like that. The guy that made it and put all that in is a complete moron. Id pay for it via steam ffs!
ETA: I love Day of Defeat

Should be finished about 8.
Let me know what server you are on and I'll try to join! Robatron will hopefully join us at some point
I think in the last half hour I've got the hang of it... A bit.
I joined 2 diff servers, one vanilla which was tough and another French one.
Only met 2 people. Nice Dutch chap that told me good places to get guns and explained lots. Then a French dude that was trying to be nice but ended up getting in the way.
In 3 hours I fired 1 bullet. By accident.... A million zombies came running so I decided against firing at them again. Didn't find any baddies, just a chopper flying overhead.
Had a Winchester, an Enfield, M4, double barrel and an M1911.
Only problem I had was that I couldn't figure out how to punch? Almost gave up as I died 5 times in a row, then realised you can hide in bushes etc to get away from zombies.
The map size is mind boggling. Still had no idea where I was, or where to go. Got all my guns from either the fire station or the barns out of town.

Best place for military loot is the small camp in the central town of Stary Sabor, the North West Airfield (or NWAF as you'll likely see in sidechat) or the North East Airfield (NEAF). There is also a small camp on the northern edge of Berezino.Bear in mind though people who run their own servers can change the maps to their own likings, so may put additional bases in.
The French server last night, you could select your spawn which was nice. Although it was in Russian so took some guessing...
Overall though, can see myself loosing a vast number of hours to it...
ETA: Just printed off a map... 12 x A4 sheets stuck together, Big enough?
