Noticed this posted on twitter this morning; seems a teaser trailer has been released ahead of the official trailer due the end of this week: https://www.gamespot.com/far-cry-5/

Radical change regarding deciding to set it in Montana, instead of some vague African country/tropical island/mountain region of the previous games. I would hope they are going to give the side missions a little more depth/less repetitiveness than 2/3/4 but I won't hold my breath.

I'm 50/50 on this; I didn't like it in FC3 when it was first introduced but didn't mind it in FC4 - it forces you to explore the world more thoroughly. That said I could probably live without it. NPCs with more than 4 pre-recorded lines of dialogue would be a bonus too.

TBH I've enjoyed all of them, despite each having their flaws:

  1. set the ground work for a lush, jungle-based shooter with stealth being key. Totally ruined by the second half of the game; plenty of expansion packs.
  2. Complete change of direction for the game but I loved the Africa setting; I even liked that guns wore out and the challenge that presented. fked up stealth system + checkpoint respawning as mentioned about was annoying.
  3. Was the quintessential sandbox game; great setting, great villain, reasonable story, but repetitive missions and a QTE battle with Vas and the other bosses felt like a cop out.
  4. was #3 but polished a little (better graphics, new mechanics like animal riding, the buzzer etc) but it has the same flaws as #3 as well.
I do hope #5 is decent. After the recent news that Deus Ex is dead and possibly Hitman S2 as well, I'm hoping FC can hold me over.

I see FR5 has got the gossip/hype it probably wanted. Apparently a number of religious groups in the US are unhappy with the apparent depiction of Christianity in the trailer, claiming it amounts to hatred. Presumably they also protested as vigorously when FC2 was set in Africa, FC3 in the Caribbean and FC4 in the Himalayas rofl

I strongly suspect that if anyone actually takes a meaningful "controversy" that has come out about FarCry 5 they will realise its probably been engineered by Ubisofts PR department. The controversy always neatly follows on from the reveal, securing them more exposure than they would normally get and all for free.

Lets also face it, FC3 was a solid FPS but puddle deep plot wise and a pretty average game overall. FC4 was essentially more of the same in a different map. FC5 will be no different. I am sure there will be towers that need scaling, broadcasts that need turning off, animals to hunt so you can upgrade your character, lots of busy work and fetch quests, some quirky characters, a radio station DJ broadcasting the same content ad nauseum, a few big set pieces and some disappointing boss battles. Oh and dont forget the obligatory drug / trip mission! YAWN
Oh I completely agree. Will still get it though hehe

Quite a few seem to be saying it's less than the sum of its parts; getting 3/3.5 out of 5 etc etc (although I never trust such reductive ratings). Fact is everything I've read seems to suggest what I love about Far Cry games is still present and it's not a total dud, so I'm still planning to get it. Won't be able to for a few weeks however; but that should mean I can pick up a secondhand copy from game for a few quid off.

I've given in; I was going to wait a week or two but thought fk it - it's the only game I'm looking forward to this year (unless Last of Us 2 drops before December). Currently downloading; probably going to be an all-nighter biggrin

Am I the only one that died like 3 times in the fking prologue?
As soon as the game started I went straight into options, bumped the difficulty up to hard and turned off all HUD and assists (I like a challenge). I couldn’t even get past the first bit where the trucks start chasing you! Two shots and you’re dead; not even any time to bandage up. Sheepishly turned difficultly back to normal and have left it there.

Still a good challenge with everything else turned off though. Only finished Dutch’s island so far, but looking forward to the rest.

I find that te game is great but you can not travel anywhere to advance the story. You simply end up in a rolling gunfight everywhere endlessly. I end up using the fast travel everywhere which means i dont get to explore everywhere.

Theres too many bad guys.
I've only played about 10hrs so far (only halfway through the first area I'm exploring) and this couldn't be more accurate! You choose to head towards an objective, make sure you're tooled up with ammo, armor and health and 200m down the road you get dragged into a firefight that eliminates your body armor, 80% of your ammo and 2/3 of your health. So you go back to restock, and then the exact same thing happens to you again! So you decide to use a different route, stay away from the roads, only to be either a) pounded upon by a cougar or b) strafed to death by a patrol plane.

Still love it though; it's a gorgeous looking game, tons of detail. So far world-building things like the buildings, outposts etc don't appear to be copy & paste like in prior games, and my original fear of the side missions being repetitive are anything but.

ETA the weapons are a bit hit and miss (literally) but I've become strangely proficient with a silenced 1911 - my kills with it appear to out-number my other weapons by about 5:1!

Yeah I agree with all the cultists looking the same; on the up-side as I'm playing with zero markers/HUD it makes them very easy to identify without having to dish out a bit of friendly-fire!

Still having the same issue with being dragged into fire-fights at every corner, however they do seem to be subsiding (I think I've cleared out most of the outposts in the area). Had a fantastic occurrence last night where I had been able to snipe 2 of 3 alarms in an outpost but couldn't see the third (although I could see where it was). Just as I was about to move around the base a cultist drove up in a truck and smashed into the alarm, doing the job for me! Also had a fantastic fight last night where a few cultists were hiding out in some bushes and in the space of 1 minute around a dozen allies showed up to join the fight, along with a by-plane that was being pursued by a patrol plane. Funny thing was every time a new team showed up they'd run over or maim somebody already there. When the fight was over a NPC got on a quad bike and tried to turn around but drove into an explosive barrel in doing so and blew himself up hehe

Not surprised to see it's rocketed to the top of the charts in it's first week of release; apparently the launch is the biggest in the series.

I tried to find the suppressors for sale last night and couldn't but i'm sure i have seen them. Are they just in the general weapons shop?
Yes, you need to select a weapon (that you have bought/is in your inventory) and (on PS4 at least) press X to customize; most weapons will have scope and suppressor options.

Only thing I don't like about the in-game weapon mechanics is the inability to remove attachments on the hoof like you can in Ghost Recon Wildlands; I miss being able to switch between silent and loud really quickly. On the upside it appears adding suppressors does not reduce the damage rating of the weapon.

Some gunfights can be a bit hard and result in being killed a few times before coming out on top. But some things are a bit too easy. For example last night, I used a helicopter (buy an armed one asap) to capture an outpost in about 15s. Just fired a few rockets at the alarms which took out most of the bad guys at the same time. Then a couple of blasts with the gun to mop up the last couple.

The helicopter is good for getting around easily but does kind of take away from the challenge of some missions and make other vehicles a bit redundant.
The great thing about Far Cry (ever since #3) is that you can approach the outposts however you like; sure you can go steaming in with a helicopter and do it that way, but you could also load up a truck with C4 and roll it down a hill and blow it up, or go all stealthy with a silenced rifle or pretend to be John Wick with nothing but a 1911. Personally I try to take each new outpost in a totally different way just to mix it up.

When you buy a helicopter, is it yours to keep for ever even if it gets destroyed etc?
Yes you own it for good; if it gets destroyed you just need to find a hanger and when you go into the shop menu, it'll give you the option to respawn it.

It happens as you build up resistance in the area (usually by blowing up silos/liberating outposts/blowing up cult tankers and trucks etc). Once you hit a certain level they capture you; happened to me twice in John's area. Just away to venture into Jacob's or Faith's next.

No, you get dragged off to the baddies' hideout where a cut scene plays out, and then you inevitably escape and manage to get back out into the open world and continue the game. They are there purely to serve as a "this is why you hate the bad guys" function and make their inevitable deaths all that bit more cathartic.

I just finished John’s region. I find flying the plane and attacking another plane impossible, so I bailed, parachuted and ran to get a helicopter.
I seemed to get really lucky landing a middle strike on him as I approached, wiping 90% of his health out. Actually finding the planes easy to fly, which surprised me.

However I’ve moved onto Jacob’s region now and I’ve kinda gone off the boil; it’s back to constant fire-fights ever 200m. At least I’m used to the game mechanics now so it’s easier to deal with.

Are you playing on console or PC?

On PC, I find the helicopter easy, but the plane very difficult, because shooting and your view are on the mouse, while pitch and yaw are on WASD, but the sight is fixed, so when you move the mouse, you lose the sight. I am going to try switching to using the mouse for pitch and yaw when flying a plane.
PS4; controller probably makes a big difference then. It may help that I was playing GR Wildlands immediately before this and its planes are a bh to fly; FC5's are very easy in comparison and things like landing etc is much smoother.

Still enjoying this, although Jacob's captures are really grating on me. Latest annoyance was last night, when I repeatedly shot down patrol planes (usually with a jeep-mounted LMG but sometimes with an RPG or LMG) they kamikazed into me - EVERY SINGLE TIME. So I shoot down a plane, it crashes into me (despite me running in different directions to try and take cover), kills me, game reloads and there is the plane again. Rinse and repeat.

I'd say I'm enjoying the game more than FC3 & 4, however I don't think there is going to be any replay value in it, especially with the hacked-in captures that only serve to give you backstory (I've taken to simply skipping the cut scenes now).

It is just repetitive, rubbish missions with stupid things thrown in, like being attacked by animals and then immediately attacked by some fanatics on what must be the busiest, densest traffic zones in Montana! Kill the animals and then the fanatics and go back to collect the animal skins but they are already gone!
I totally agree. But at the same time there are spare, expansive forest and mountain areas of the map (usually on the extremities of the map) that are completely devoid of anything other than the occasional deer or other non-aggressive animal so you can do a spot of hunting or fishing in near complete silence with only the sound of a gentle breeze in your ears.

Very much a game of two halves.

Anyone got to large house in Jacobs section that when you get close you faint and then are moved about 500 yards away?

I'm currently on the 3rd area but still have loads to do.
That's Jacob's compound; it makes you faint to stop you trying to get in there. Only halfway through his region so not sure if the end-story for his character is here, as I've seen a few other venues that very much look like boss-battle arenas.
