Anyone else eagerly awaiting Days Gone? Due to be released 8 weeks today.

Having watched lots of trailers and clips on YouTube I think it will be the game of 2019 for me. Strikes me as a slightly tougher, zombie version of Fallout.

Can’t wait smile

Not read any reviews but seen a few clips on YouTube. Looks impressive to me.

I won’t be paying £50 for it tomorrow but in a couple of weeks I’ll try to pick up a copy for £40. Still not completed RDR2 anyway so got a bit of time before I need a new game.

If so what do you think?
Bought it today. Should hopefully get a few hours in tomorrow night.

Really enjoying it actually. Played about 15 hours so far. If you like open world games then I’m sure you will love it.

It’s not too dissimilar to fallout in some ways. I’m surprised there’s been many negative reviews.

Basically you drive about on your bike completing missions for local groups or for your brother. All the time whilst trying to get eaten by zombies.

There’s a good day/night interface with changing weather. Zombies are stronger and more numerous on a night but can’t see you as easily. I tend to try and do more missions in the day (you can sleep to change the time).

Your bike is the main mode of transport (world is too large/dangerous to travel far on foot). You have to repair your bike with scrap which is found here and there. You also have to top up with fuel so keep an eye out for gas cans or destroyed petrol stations.

Weapons can be bought, found and upgraded.

Skill points are earned and can be used to upgrade health and gain attributes (similar to far cry).

I’m not very far in but it’s a solid 8/10 so far for me. I’m really enjoying it.

Downsides are limited but I agree with some of the reviews saying load times are long (although you come across these load times just once or twice in a 3hr stint on the game so not too troublesome.

I initially thought the bike handling was sloppy but following some upgrades it’s actually fine.

Can’t really think of any other negatives off top of my head.

I love open world games such as fallout and far cry. I think this game (so far) is better than far cry. It’s unlikely to match fallout but then again little can touch that series for me.

Fire away with any questions. I probably won’t get chance to play again until Friday night so bare with me.

GTA is one of my favourite ever games. This is similar in its an open world shooter but from there on in the similarities end.

I’ve not played assassins creed (not sure why as it seems up my street) but in regards Far Cry I think this game is much better. The first 2 far cry’s were good but I agree they have been sloppy recently.

This game has a lot of sneaking about. It’s all about stealth. You simply can’t go in all guns blazing like you do on GTA. I love the stealth factor of this game. Sometimes you come up against situations where you have to run. Tackling more than 4-5 zombies with melee attacks is a no no. Tackling more than 10 using guns would be tough. Last night I estimated 60-80 in a horde moving through the valley below me. I absolutely st myself. These zombies can climb on roofs etc and are a bit terrifying. No option but to get on the bike and get out of there.

You’ve also got roving bandit gangs that are out to get you. Watch as much game play as you can on YouTube. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed after listing those games; you seem to be on a similar wavelength to me when it comes to open world shooters.

Thanks for the heads up RE assassins creed. It’s always been on my list but I’ve just never got round to it. I only get through about 1 game per year due to work commitments and having a young child. I suppose there has always been something else that I’ve fancied slightly more.

I've been trying to play it, but it's been mostly frustrating.

- Seems to take a very long time to load.
- Controls are poor - holding down the thumbstick to run? Great if you like a permanent imprint of the thumbstick on your (now numb) thumb. Otherwise stupid. Just put it on a face button like every single other game, there's a reason they did that you know.
- Perform some actions and he swaps from the melee weapon to what seems to be a random pistol. Great, I was about to melee that zombie now I am forced to use a loud gun instead or get my face bitten off. Thanks a bunch.
- Sometimes the weapon wheel thing seems to ignore that I'm holding a direction trying to select something, so I have to exit the menu and come back in again.
- The bike handling in the intro was comically bad. I can't say it makes me look forward to ever having to use the bike again in the rest of the game.
- pick some things up by walking over them, but other stuff you have to hold square - why??? Why would I NOT pick up that piece of loot? Understandable for weapons but not for loot items, just let me hoover them up as I can do with the loot the zombies drop. Pointless busy work to make it seem "deeper" and more RPG-ish I suppose.

On the plus side is looks nice enough, voice acting seems OK, atmosphere is pretty good etc..

But to top it off - I spent about an hour in the first little area, looting everything, carefully stealth-killing zombies, then saved it and went for dinner, only to discover the next day that it didn't in fact save because (after looking online) - I've not yet got the motorbike. It let me select the Save option and whatnot, theres even a savegame with the correct timestamp, but I'm back at the start of that mission.

At this point the joypad was launched across the room accompanied by some very loud profanity, and it's not been loaded up since.
Agree with the load times but I wouldn’t say it’s a huge issue. I can’t say the other issues have affected me.

In terms of holding down square to pick something up, you have to do this for everything except zombie ears. The zombies don’t drop loot you take their ears after killing them to trade at outposts.

Bike handling improves significantly after the intro.

I can’t say that I’ve ever swapped from a melee weapon to a gun accidentally and holding down L3 to run isn’t an issue for me either.

Sunk about 10 hours into this now and it’s definitely a grower. Similar to fallout 4 but not yet on anywhere near the same level for me. Maybe it needs more time.

Main frustration is the refuelling of the bike at times when you really don’t need an extra problem.

I’m hoping another couple of good sessions on it will convince me to see it through to the end
You can eventually upgrade the bike with bigger fuel tanks which negates a lot of this issue.

How does it compare to last of us 2? Not finished it yet but looking for something to play next. Really love last of us so am hoping for something similar quality.
The Last of Us II is probably in my top 5 all time games and I don’t think Days Gone quite matches it. That being said Days Gone is still an excellent game. Completely different to Last of Us though as DG is completely open world whereas TLoU is quite linear.

Any other similar game recommendations?

I've just started red dead redemption 2 and all I can say is that whilst it's very pretty it's as slow as st and I'm already bored of riding a horse.
RDR2 is probably a better game overall than Days Gone, and I think most would agree with that. Stick with it it’s up there with Fallout in terms of playability and longevity.
