Thought I'd start a nature photos thread as a nice place to collect all our shots of flora and fauna. I know we've already got a separate birds thread but I see so many great shots of mammals and plant life passing through the Random Photos thread that I thought they deserved a thread of their own.

I'll kick it off with a few flower shots I took at the weekend, I'm trying to keep a record of all the flowers I see in my local patch of forest this year, I only wish I had a dedicated macro lens so that I could get really close.

Great photo's everyone, I spent Saturday at Colchester Zoo so should have a few new ones to add soon.

Lovely shot (as are all the rest you posted) but I'd say that the white flowers were Wild Garlic rather than Daisies.

Sorry to say they don't look anything much like wild garlic, but it's not a daisy either. Fairly sure they're greater stichwort flowers, quite pretty and fairly common smile
You're right, now I've looked again after finally getting some sleep (busy weekend!) it's definitely not Wild Garlic.

WOW!

they roam the woods here but have never seen one, isn't it unusual for them to be out during the day?

incredible captures bow
Thanks.

We get fairly regular glimpses of them here but this was by far the best encounter we've had since we moved down here last year. The two sows came within about two feet when we had our first contact with them today, checking us out to make sure we were not a threat. Once they'd done that they allowed the piglets to come closer to us as well, a couple of them ending up within about five feet of me. All in all it was an amazing encounter.

Final Wild Boar photos from this week are now up, although I may be boaring you with more next week as I've been asked to go out with one of the camera men that works on Springwatch this weekend to see if we can find some.

FPC - Great photos as ever!

Duck Pond - Fantastic set, love the Weasel in particular.

More Boar from me. I played guide at the weekend for another photographer but still managed to grab a few I was happy with. This was by far the longest encounter I've had yet, over four hours with this one sounder, made up of two sows and seven piglets.

Lovely shot, again smile

Went to a talk this eve with one of the top Forestry Commission guys from the forest of dean about the boar. Surprised by how balanced his view was and also by how high the numbers are thought to be at the moment (which I believe from his stats and explanation). 438 animals as a fairly definite figure meaning perhaps closer to 500-600 as a realistic figure, certainly more than the Friends of the boar claim are left. But who knows smile

Nice balanced talk that enlightened me a little as to the long-term management issues and prospects for the FoD boar population. Must go back and get some beeter pics soon biggrin

Back with more Boar!

This first one looks like he has been practising for the London 2012 Olympic showjumping.

Leaping Boar 01 by dogsey, on Flickr

This Boar was a very impressive sight, bulky and with a good thick ridge of bristles down the back.

Large Boar by dogsey, on Flickr

I think this one speaks for itself.

Guess what. Something other than Boar for a change! hehe

Tough shot to get, lens wide open, ISO as high as possible, pray that the shutter speed is enough and then roughly a 100% crop!
