June 2018 Photography Competition

The theme for the June competition is:

Making a splash


Rules:

The photos taken must be your own work and can be taken at anytime. I'm extending the rule change from last month to allow photographs from your back catalogue as it's been quite fun to see all the different entries.
The competition will run from the first to the last day of the month.
The winner from the previous month decides on the topic for the following month and judges it at the end of the month.
Entries and discussion on this single thread, please.
All entrants acknowledge that they may indeed win and that their adherence to convention ensures everyone else's continued fun.
Photos entered should be no bigger than 800 pixels wide for a landscape photo and 600 pixels high for a portrait photo due to the PH squash factor. Links to larger versions are permissible.

Well done to everyone who entered, it was great to see a large variety of subject matter and composition choice.

Honourable mention goes to Nik da Greek for their picture caption, purely for the WTF?ness of it all

Third place

Goes to Nigel_O for this lovely shot. I love the composition and it wouldn't go amiss on the cover of a hardback book (probably some Scandinavian Murder Mystery).

The winner was a difficult choice as I kept shuffling backing and forth between the top two as they are so different and yet such brilliant images for contrasting reasons.

Second place

Goes to JonChalk for this great moment in time capture. I love the balance of the sunset backlighting the scene combined with the random craziness of the wave as it crashes against the sand. I'm also impressed by the nerves of steel required to place their camera in such a risky position to capture the shot as I would have chickened out from the water damage risks...

Winner

Vintage Racer for this epic pic. I'm a sucker for a good bird shot but this one captures the movement of the water beautifully and the control of the bird in flight (just look at how close hose wingtips are to the water!). It demonstrates the fantastic level of skill and knowledge required to tame the lens (Nikon 200-500) to take the shot, it's a lens I own so I know full well how difficult it can sometimes be at the long end when tracking a fast moving object.
