Apologies, another "What Camera"
Discussion
Evening all, apologies for yet another but looking for some advice.
I've has a few cameras over the years from point and shoot to DSLR (EOS400D). I currently have a fuji Finepix which is OK and does most things but battery life isn't great and it's getting on a bit.
With a budget of up to £900, with the lower the better; I'm after something that will do well with taking photos of my daughter on her horse - so reasonably fast with decent zoom, say 200mm to 300mm range. Not against a DSLR but would rather not be carrying multiple lenses around if I can avoid it.
I had my eyes on a Nikon Coolpix 950 or 1000 but they look to me over-marketed with mega-zoom capabilities and I think I'd get bored with taking photos of the moon rather quickly.
Not against going used either but would rather buy from a vendor with at least some sort of warranty rather than privately.

What about this? It's a bundle so I'm sure I'm looking at a load of stuff that is adding to that price but the 4000d gets decent reviews and "only" 3 lenses to carry around..

ETA: I found a youtube review where is said it was only £250 new in Feb 2018 with a kit lens so the above does seem like a lot of unneeded stuff apart from the lenses.

Am also interested in this. I am not an avid photographer but do enjoy playing, and my son enjoys wildlife photography now and again.
We currently share an older Nikon D40X with a 300mm lens and the bog standard 50m lens that came with it, along with some macro rings for close up work......but would really like to move to something that doesn't involve carting around lenses and bags and is more point and shoot. He has particular found the 300mm lens limiting when he's trying to shoot birds or local wildlife (he's been seen trying to creep around the local fields at dusk trying to get shots of local deer but hasn't managed to get anywhere near close enough :-))
The Nikon P950 really seems to tick the boxes, though I'm sure the purists might have something to say about that :-) .... anyone use one as an amateur and can comment. It seems to have all the things we want : Image quality is fine for us amateurs, the superzoom will really help in terms of wildlife and seems pretty good close up, all in a point and shoot format that will be just fine for holiday snaps when we are out and about aswell. I also weighed the current D40X with 300m lens and it's 25% heavier than the P950 and size not that much different.
What am I missing ?
Also, stock seems low. Anyone use CameraWorld for online purchase ? Reputable supplier ?
Thanks. I think we are on the same page and I'm still hovering over the 950. Like you say though there isn't a great deal of stock. We currently share an older Nikon D40X with a 300mm lens and the bog standard 50m lens that came with it, along with some macro rings for close up work......but would really like to move to something that doesn't involve carting around lenses and bags and is more point and shoot. The weight difference will 100% be down to body construction and "real" glass in the lens. And metal mountings.

Well the sensor on the P950 is about a quarter of the size of that on the RX10iv...
This is the reason I haven't bought the 950. Sensor size really does matter but I need to do more research to see how it would fare tracking a horse and rider at canter speeds and above with jumps. Moon on a stick I know. Does the rx10iv allow lense swappage?

I specifically wanted a long lens for animal / sports photography, but without the inconvenience of carrying more than 1 lens. I'm happy with the size, its lighter than my current Nikon D40X with 300mm lens but with the convenience of everything from macro to telephoto all in one package. I'll be able to use it on holidays for holidays snaps, watching my sons compete at athletics and he can use it when he's out stalking deer / red kite that live near me.
I'm sure photographers and camera buffs will never get one, as it's not designed for you guys, it's designed for people like me......lazy part time happy snappers with a few ££ to spend :-)
Very much this for me too. I have a very old EOS 400D with a whole bunch of lenses but it’s a pain in the arse to constantly change the lenses and then set up the required settings to then have to switch back to a smaller lens for something else. This will do me very well for picking up, press a few buttons for what I want and snap away. I can also have pre set profiles for what I want to do. It’s quick enough for decent motorsport pics and if I feel like taking photos of the moon I can. Have bitten the bullet and ordered a P950.
Hi Steve, any update on your camera? If you ordered on the 22nd it's either the 6th working day or the 9th calendar? I'm not sure if they only count working days in their "less than 10 days" estimate.I ordered on the evening of the 26th so the clock probably didn't start counting until the 27th. Their invoice layout isn't exactly well put together either:
I have redacted the personal info bits.

No updates as of 7pm Wed 2nd. I ordered on their system on Saturday 22nd, with immediate confirmation, invoice came through on 28th with delivery not date 25th. Absolutely zero since.
I called them as I couldn't get the tracking number to work and they confirmed it's working days, not calendar. So looks like you're on day 8 or thereabout with be around a week behind.I read somewhere that it was the glass for lenses that is holding things up. Madness really.
The lady I spoke to was in Portugal. She could see all of my details, order number, date of order and even their "internal tracking number". Apparently, their internal number allows for earlier tracking which then marries up to the UPS tracking number so for that not to show anything to even them leads me to believe it hasn't even cleared whatever warehouse it was shipping from.
