Now, forgive me as I'm a relative Newbie on here and this might have been done before, but what about a Pistonheads calender for 2005?

I haven't even broached this with Ted himself (looking forward to meeting him sometime and thanking him persoanlly for an excellent site).

So what about it?

We have say 10months to get our acts together, I'll gladly put it together, scan images, DTP etc and get it ready for press when the time comes. It could then be sold and the profits given back to Ted/Pistonheads.com to keep things ticking along.

We have an excellent source of cars and inspiration all around us, we could even have a poll nearer the time and the members decide which shots we use.

Any comments?

Tim

PS: This isn't an excuse for me to try out my new lens that arrived this morning...

...honest.

Only problem with an '04 calender would be that we only have a month left and that would mean that we'd be searching our archives for shots rather than taking new ones.

I guess we could do an 18month one, say August - December for the first year?

print cost is so cheap that 18sheets isn't going to break the bank.

The lens: That's approx 600mm, it's the 3x teleconverter, which is in effect 420mm/2.8 35mm equivalent, then the 1.45 teleconverter is fitted to the end, which is the equivalent of a 35mm 200mm lens.

That'll shag your max aperture then!

Yep, It is a bit of a trade off, so, fingers crossed for a bright sunny day.

I can sort the printing, and can probabally get it down to acceptable levels. Depends on who you know.

I had thought, as I said in my first post, about this being a 2005 calendar.

Setting shouldn't be a problem, I'm sitting here at my Mac with Quark and Photoshop open 6 days a week anyway.

I'd already thought about the sponsorship idea, I've heard from Ted but am currently waiting to hear from him to discuss the details.

Thanks for the offer of templates, what format are they in?

I'll be honest and hadn't envisaged Pistonheads having to stump up any money. I had in mind that it would be printed dependant on advance orders, i.e. orders placed up until mid October for delivery for Christmas.

I hadn't envisaged this being an issue, I'll gladly produce a print on demand if we need to.

Digi-print and binding is so cheap.

Before this goes wayyyy off topic.

Can I make a few comments/suggestions.

My initial idea was a calendar produced using photos of cars owned by and taken by members of Pistonheads.com, I had envisaged more EVO rather than MaxPower, i.e not so much t&a as bhp!

The idea was that people would submit their photos for inclusion in the calendar, the rules for inclusion would be the same for everyone. Assuming that we gat a lot of 'entries' then they could be whittled down to say 20-30 photos (sets of photos, dependant on page design) and that those 20-30 photos would be put to the public vote as to which ones are included in the 12 month calendar.

My role, if any, would be to scan, design, carry out any DTP and prepare the pages for press. I'm a newbie on here so I'm not very well known, but I'm a Graphic Designer by trade, specialising in Book design and all aspects of pre-press.

Does that sound fair to everyone?

Woah... calm down peeps.

Tim and I will formulate a plan for acquisition of photos and we'll decide which ones will be used.

I had to call a halt to the PH girly calendar as plans were being put in place without my approval and I need to keep a close rein on the brand.

Tim and I will sort the calendar and there will be some fun along the way but you'll have to leave the basic plan to us.

You know what they say about designing by committee

Hehehe, seems I may have opened a can of worms, sorry Ted.

Could be a nice project if we can establish the ground rules.

Hi Ted,

I wasn't putting that design as final btw, just trying to get people out there clicking away, that thread on General with all the pics is just fantastic!

As for package, as I've said I'm a graphic Designer the main DTP software I use is Quark Xpress, as for templates, the world is your oyster as I don't use any, but I'll create the design once we've finalised the ideas.

Images, Ideally as hires as possible from digital cameras, peopel could submit them to me/other pistonhead designers for 'assesment'. Photos again should be ideally 10x8 but I can scan any size upto A4, I can also accept slides/transparancies.

Steve, quick question. Do you shoot at race meets, i.e. the other side of the chain link. If so what criterior do you need to meet to be allowed to do so, is it NUJ membership or something?

Any advise appreciated, as I'm getting fed up with my sedatory existance in front of this computer and want/need to get out!
