S Club Euro Tour 2014 - Number 5 - Bish Bash BOSCH

When Friday 6th June until Tuesday 10th June
Where Through France & Belgium to Germany for the 3 Nations Gathering 2014 (which includes a TVR car show, Black Forest scenic drives and option to visit the Bosch Test Track or Porsche & Mercedes museums in Stuttgart).

The location of the 3 Nations Gathering rotates each year between Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The hosts of the ‘3NG14’ are the TVRiders Blackforest, who are extremely enthusiastic about all things related to TVR. Some of you met Chris Willy & Andrej, part of the organising team, in Baden Baden on last year's tour. 2014 is the 20th anniversary of the TVRiders and they are working hard to make this an extra special weekend.

Thanks to the excellent response to this topic and from members of the TVRCC to the feature in Sprint it is possible the 3NG14 might become the biggest ever TVR event on mainland Europe...

Format of tour is the same as previous ones:
  1. 4 nights / 5 days, plus option to stay in Calais the night before
  2. 2 nights in one of the hotels so we're not packing and unpacking every day, plus there is the freedom to do as much or as little driving as desired on middle day
  3. Hotels will not be 5 star palaces but will offer a good standard of food and accommodation, be as reasonably priced as possible, etc.
Thurs 5th June
Base Camp - Home to Calais

We will be leaving Calais after breakfast on Friday (exact time tbc) so there will be the option of staying in Calais on Thursday for those who want to break their journey from the UK, get the one hour time difference out of the way and start Day 1 refreshed after the slog round the M25 and through Kent. For any first timers thinking of attending, most people on previous tours (apart from those living in Kent) have taken this option but you do not have to.

Friday 6th June
Induction Day - Calais to Corbion
240 miles / 6 hrs
With quite a few new people in the group this year today should give them a good introduction to what S Club Touring is all about i.e. drivingburgerbeerrofl and, maybe, some sleep

The original plan was to head south and stay on the edge of the Vosges mountains tonight but now we'll be taking a more northerly route. Apart from the first 1.5hrs the day will be spent on the flowing roads to and in the Ardennes. Lunch will be at the Chimay brewery shop and we will stay at the same excellent hotel some of us visited in 2012 on the way to Spa.

Some of the reasons for changing the route are
  • Regardless of which way we go to the Vosges it would 5 hours and lot of miles on the French motorways (plus the toll fees!) just to get to there. The Ardennes route means we get to some good roads a lot lot earlier in the day, perhaps even before the GTS need to stop for a rest/coffee/pee hehe
  • The Vosges are on the French/German border and in both countries this is a Public Holiday weekend and having spoken to several hotels in the area it is clear the twisty roads will be busy on Saturday which might hinder our, ahem, "progress" to Karlsruhe driving
  • Some of us were only in the Vosges during the 2013 tour but it is a couple of years since we have been to the Ardennes.
  • The Vosges are a bit out of the way for getting to Karlsruhe but there is a chance they will be closer to the route to our destination in 2015. But more on that next year... wink
  • In 2012 the lunch at Chimay was superb - the brewery's tasting menu was popular with some of the passengers drink and dinner at the hotel was one of the best "on tour" meals I've ever had lick
New routes will supplied for this year, not that we will be able to remember all (any?!) of the roads from 2012.

Saturday 7th June
S Express - Corbion to Rastatt & Karlsruhe
200 miles / 4.25 hrs

First part of day in the Ardennes before joining the motorway for a sprint through Luxembourg (stopping for some tax free fuel on the way wink ) to join the 3 Nations Gathering early afternoon at their car show at Rastatt Palace.
An early dinner will be provided at the Palace.
After dinner it's a short blast on the unrestricted autobahn to our hotel and bar in Karlsruhe. Anyone remember the motorway from Nurburg to Spa at sunset in 2012...?!

Sunday 8th June
Schwarzwald - Karlsruhe to Karlsruhe

Various routes will be available today on some of the best roads in the Black Forest.
Return to hotel in Karlsruhe for dinner.

Monday 9th June
The Spirit of Driving Day - Karlsruhe to Bosch (at Boxberg) then to Kaiserslautern
200 miles / 3.25 hrs (excluding Bosch)

Chris Willy has worked a miracle to get us access to the Bosch Test Track.
Exact format of the day is still tbc. Please note, this is NOT a track day but a driving experience day similar to what you can see here
If that does not appeal, you will be able to visit the Porsche and/or Mercedes museum(s) in Stuttgart.
The Bosch centre is just over an hour East of Karlsruhe. To shorten the return journey to Calais tomorrow, tonight we be staying in Kaiserslautern.

Tuesday 10th June
Roaring Back - Kaiserslautern to Home
350 miles / 5 hrs to Calais
frown
Just like TVR it's our turn to return to the UK. Unless you live in Holland wink

Prices

Seeing as we avoiding expensive Switzerland this year, prices are a couple of £s less than last year particularly for a single room even though we need to include a small fee for joining the 3 Nations Gathering smile
Single £382 (+£62 for Calais)
Double or twin £288 (+£42 for Calais)
Bosch day £142 per car plus £48 for an additional driver.

Note - If after paying you are unable to attend I cannot guarantee a refund will be available but I will do my best to get your money back by contacting the hotel and / or trying to fill your place with someone else.

What's included
  • 4 nights bed & breakfast
  • Satnav files & maps
  • Witty banter
What's excluded
  • Channel crossings
  • Evening meals (but payment for these will need to be collected before we depart)
  • Fluids (beer & petrol)
  • Anything else not mentioned in "What's included"

Cheers for now,
L'rs

Wow, what a brilliant response gents - 13 cars in 12hrs and quite a few new "S Club Tourers" as well!! clapbiggrin

I cannot see Mr Plow's name on the list despite him being one of the people encouraging / reassuring me the 3NG14 meet would be a popular destination. Perhaps he's too busy driving his old car? He sent me an email earlier saying he'd taken it to get some quotes and he'd "forgotten how much fun it is"!!

If you are looking at this topic and unsure whether to come along, do not worry, we were all first timers once. You can go at your own pace, there's no need to worry you'll be holding people up OR be held up by other people. It's difficult to keep a large group together on the road and it doesn't take long for small groups of likeminded folk to form. Everyone will be made welcome. Terry was on his first S tour last year and during the return chunnel crossing he said to me he felt like he had 20 new friends wink

Martin, you do realise this is an S Club trip don't you? The occasional interloper is always welcome but I've amended your spelling mistake in the list wink

I don't have a problem with the non-TVRs joining us, but they will have to be like the Top Gear Beetle hanging around at the back of the group biggrin

I'll check with the TVRiders about the non-TVRs taking part at Bosch.

It'll fit behind TreVoR, I am sure it will. Although 100 clearly will not be enough!

I see it's still got the Dutch plates from when it was delivered here. Would look better behind a Dutch registered S. Anyone able to think of one scratchchin

Yep I realise that this is for the S Club but I was having an email chat with Andrej and he suggested it may be worth a visit so I started looking to find more info about the event and there was your posting so I thought I would see if you lot would put up with me. I still have to square it away at home hence the tentative but if I am allowed out to play could I join you?

Currently I have an empty seat and am happy to share a room if someone is looking for a cost effective way of getting there, assuming I can get there. If so it will be the first Euro trip with the car hopefully run in and mapped after the 4.7 engine upgrade, gearbox upgrade, diff and driveshaft upgrades so she should provide a bit of fun;-)
No problem Martin, I was only pulling your leg (which is why I made the change to "S"erbera in the list wink )
This trip will be a good shakedown for you before hitting the Mulsanne straight at the Le Mans Classic driving With you there at least Liam and his recently breathed on Chimaera will have someone to "play with" on the Autobahn... biggrin

Those that know me well will be quick to tell you that my technical knowledge is... er... um... rather limited! I know the car spent some time at V8 Developments. Last time I spoke to Liam he did explain what they had done but to be honest it didn't make a lot of sense to me! I'm sure he said his 4.5 is now pushing out more powah than a 5.0....

Working on it. I'd normally get all the costs sorted before starting the topic but, as you can see by the reaction so far, people were keen to find out the plan sooner rather than later.

I'll have the hotels sorted soon and the TVRiders will firm up the Bosch arrangements hopefully by the end of January wink

I'm sure I read a comment from Maffe in another topic 3-4 weeks ago that he wasn't going on the tour this year.

I have been amazed by the response this year and this is before I've even sorted the final hotel and been able to confirm the prices... Very reluctantly I'm going to have to put a limit on the "S Tour" numbers at this stage. The hotels I've found so far have a fixed number of rooms available and, unlike simply driving to / from an event (which is pretty straightforward), this is a full on road trip where we're moving each day - so many cars and people could make things unnecessarily difficult.

Over the weekend I was contacted by a couple of regulars who are checking about getting days off, asking potential passengers, etc, so spaces 28 & 29 are theirs if they want them. Once prices are available, details of the Bosch day are known, etc, some currently on the list might not commit which would free up a couple of places.

If this tour runs out of spaces there's no reason why you cannot meet us at the 3NG14 in Germany and spend the rest of the weekend with us there. Quite a few cars from the TVRCC have already registered and will be there from Friday afternoon so you'll certainly not be alone. PM me if you want more info wink

That's a shame Martin, I had you down as a potential room mate if my "plan A" does not work out frown

Matt has had his holiday request approved so Gary & Matt can make it. Rather than re-do the whole list I have put them in Martin's place.

Liam is also coming (I'm not sure if he was offended that nobody has asked about him so far!) but at the moment he does not know about his passenger.

Result of above is there are now 4 spaces remaining. If you are interested in joining us simply type your details over "available" in the list.

Any thoughts about the return from Stuttgart and how long that's likely to take ? I'm wondering whether a return to the UK on Tuesday is realistic ?
Glad I'm not the only one with that thought!

The Bosch centre is approx. 1hr east of Karlsruhe, where we'll be staying on Saturday and Sunday, and Karlsruhe is 6hrs exactly from Calais. I agree that if we also stay there on Monday 6hrs is too far to drive to Calais on Tuesday. Getting to Calais would be fine but then a channel crossing and onward drive in the UK? Not for me thanks!

Therefore I am negotiating hard with several hotels within a max of 5hrs from Calais. We will not need to travel too far after a day at Bosch but will also comfortably be able to make a mid afternoon channel crossing (the normal sort of time we aim for). And that is 5hrs of mainly m'way so hopefully we'll be a bit quicker than that estimate.

I wouldn't want to be any further than 5hrs from Calais on Monday night - that's roughly how long my favourite route back from the Nurburgring takes, which is fine, even though that means using the Brussels ring road which can cause delays. Our route from this part of Germany will be a lot more straightforward.

Hope that helps?

As soon as I can get this hotel sorted and the TVRiders can finalise the format of the Bosch day I'll let everyone have the final details wink

Alternatively, I may just head to Le Mans on the Tuesday but this would be car dependant.
If it were me and I had the time...
- Monday back to hotel in Karlsruhe
- Tuesday chilled day in Stuttgart at Porsche and Merc
- Wednesday half way to Le Mans
- Thursday arrive at Le Mans

Apart from the time and effort getting back to UK then returning to France almost straightaway, you'd save a few £s on fuel and another channel crossing wink
