I am planning on replacing the sump gasket with on of the Burton Power rubber type gaskets and I'm not sure whether I should be using any selant as part of the process and if so which one?

There didn't appear to be any used originally but then that's not a particularly helpful guide as it was leaking! Although not much and it had been in place for twenty eight years.

Advice much appreciated as always.

Thank you Mike, I knew I could rely on you for a comprehensive answer. thumbup

The engine is out so getting upside down will not be a problem. The chassis has also been away for treatment and as part of that I have had the crossmember modified so the next time the sump can come off without the engine being removed (probably in another twenty odd years!)

It's getting very quite on this forum isn't it, and whilst I have joined the facebook group I much prefer the format on pistonheads. Perhaps it's just at my age learning anything new (social networks wise) is a challenge!

The black Loctite SI from halfords is really good. Oil and petrol resistant, high temp and especially for sumps etc.
Thanks Boosted that looks just the job.
