A610 dual carrigeway at IKEA, 40mph, why?

Decent straight bit of dual carriageway, central reservation and armco, well lit, good road surface. No side roads, the only junction is a proper one at IKEA with slip roads on and off.
So why the fk has it been reduced to a 40 zone? Is there a history of KSI's on it?
Quite ridiculous. Thankfully I don't go that way too often.
Daftest bit of all, is at the end at Eastwood, and you run out of dual carriageway and onto a single carriageway with twists and turns and exits and driveways etc towards Ripley, you are back up to a 60 zone for a bit, then into a 50 zone, the tts!
It's backwards world I tell thee! Low limits out on the open road, higher limits in the built up areas.

Ah yes because if you get hit by a lorry doing 40 you'd be fine. The biggest enemy of people obeying speed limits is the posting of ridculous ones. If people could see the reason they are being asked to travel slowly they would be much more likely to do it.Great stretch of road - especially going down hill from the M1.
There have been quite a few accidents in that road - plus suicides when people jump off the bridge
I had a real bking a few years back off a traffic cop for doing 10 mph over the limit in my Focus RS
He should have been there about 9 years ago when I had a little run in a 996 GT3 !!!

I have to agree it is ridiculous the 40 and 50 mph limits between Jcn 26 and Ikea.
Also annoying further down the A610 towards Codnor where in the old days the "Woodlinkin" bypass was a true dual carriageway and was "interesting" until they stuck the 50mph limit on it and all the white paint.

IIRC it has been 40 for quite a while.I remember going to Ikea with Mrs Meeja about a year ago, and complaining that 40 was way too low a limit for that stretch of road.
It's been 40 for ages - a year or more. I always slow down for the 50mph section near the IKEA junction as the police do sit there taking pretty photographs to sell on at £60 each! I personally choose to ignore the 40 limits and stick to at least 50 as I've never seen any camera vans or police on that section!
It just seems daft when you can do three or four times the posted speed limit along there, and it's such a non event that it's not even worth bragging rights.
Every now & then you read a thread over in SP&L about someone getting caught doing 90 or 100 in a 40 or a 50 and I think, well, you deserve it. But I guess this is one of those roads that makes it clear that it's not always the case.

The white paint just makes it more interesting when you clip the apexs and get a bit more drift than you might have been expecting.... Daftest speed limit in the country. The limits' totally pointless heading away from the M1 towards Ikea - 70 is a perfectly reasonable speed, with ample visibility to be able to spot any hazards and react.
There is a limited case for a limit drop the other way due to the peak time queues, but a drop to 60 as you enter the bend after the Ikea junction (not before it) and a further drop to 50 where the 40 bit starts would have sufficed.
The council rejected differing limits on each carriageway because it was "confusing".
There are plenty of dual carriageways nearby with differing limits - A453 up to the Nottingham ring road and the A50 up to J24.
A strident example of the worst sort of council numptiness and buffer-zone limits.
At least you can overtake on the hatchings as there's broken lines on most of them. Get the odd flash off some numpties doing 30 who don't know that you can actually use those hatched areas!

You've seen some of the people in IKEA, surely? When they're emerging out onto that road with their minds on flatpack and only on flatpack... So why the fk has it been reduced to a 40 zone? Is there a history of KSI's on it?

It was genuinely one of the scariest things I've done in a car. To have *everyone* driving +20mph to what you're going. Bear in mind, I'm driving at the posted limit and everyone else is driving at the road's natural speed. I very quickly had to give up and just go with the flow.
It was a clear case of the new, low limit making the road far *more* dangerous than it was before - because every so often you'd get someone doing what I was doing: driving at the posted limit.

Some guy jumped off the bridge at the cemetary,and the taxi driver that stopped to offer assistance was also hit and killed by another car.vxrandy said:

Some guy jumped off the bridge at the cemetary,and the taxi driver that stopped to offer assistance was also hit and killed by another car.Its obvious Warren, as you leave the M1 and head towards Ikea at a pace which now feels like a snail could overtake you, you go up a hill then down the other side where its nigh on impossible to keep to 40mph and lo and behold 1/2 mile later is a layby where the trafpol can sit in comfort and clock you speeding on a road which should by all the rules of the road be the same speed limit as the motorway you just left.
Mind you, going the other way towards Nottingham can be a bit hairy when you come around the corner past the Eastwood slip entry doing 70mph with 1/2 mile to the M1 roundabout and find a queue of traffic at a standstill
