So just as the A4174 Ring Road Metrobus works come to its conclusion SGC is lining up some more roadworks...

Considering the tailbacks a few lane restrictions/ road cones caused I'd imagine the impact of the work is considerable.

"Works include:
Bridge Pier Strengthening
Bridge Bearing and Hinge replacement
Drainage replacement
Water proofing
Parapet replacement
Carriageway resurfacing

The extent of the works requires the southern viaduct to be completely closed to all traffic for the duration of the project, which is currently 1 year. This is because the removal of the worn out parts of the structure will mean it is too weak to safely carry any traffic until the maintenance is complete.

The works on the southern viaduct will require all westbound traffic to be diverted onto the northern viaduct. This will result in one lane of vehicular traffic each way, effectively halving the capacity of the route and causing long queues and traffic delay especially at peak times."

The preferred option is total closure of the Hambrook bound viaduct for 52weeks. Anticipated delays of upto 2hours/ 8km.

A contraflow will be in place over the remaining half of the viaduct to retain travel in both directions.

It was/is bad enough with the MetroBus works, its sedentary progress and the constant queue of traffic morning noon and night. I can’t even imagine what the impact of this is going to be, however going by the metrobus experience I believe the estimates for delay/tailbacks are very conservative.

Looks like work to set up the contraflow is starting within the next 3-4weeks as a number of overnight road closures are planned at the viaduct.

As previously mentioned it makes no sense that this work is being conducted prior to the addition of the M4 junction. I also think the repair is somewhat of a false economy... a new pre-fabricated bridge deck could be installed in quicker time for not much more cost and consequently future proof both structures as well as remove the dangerous drop between the bridges!

Along with the removal of all of the block paving on the recently extended bus stop and the rebuilding of the dry stone wall they rebuilt at Hambrook...

Friday afternoon was a flipping nightmare...It took me an hour and 10mins to travel from the M32 jct with the ring road to Bromley Heath roundabout - 1.1miles.

At Hambrook junction, traffic coming from Winterbourne turning right to the M32 was getting stranded in the middle of the junction as the volume of traffic heading towards Downend wasnt clearing the junction quick enough, if at all... Three queing lanes creeping forward trying to negotitate somone sat at 90degrees to you, stranded, trying but unable to get out of the way...Nuts.
