Hello all,

Car has been running pretty well for the last year or so, but recently it's had a twofold issue.

1. When starting after sitting it's taking longer to bite than normal: 2-3ish seconds so nothing terrible but still noticeably longer.

2. When starting 2-3 hours after a drive, it's 'half' catching on key turn, so it turns over but roughly for a few seconds until it settles in to normal idling. Possibly not all cylinders firing? If you give it gas it will rev, but sounds a bit weird.

When hot it starts fine, and in normal driving there have been no problems, only that it possibly sounds a bit raspier than normal (but could be my imagination).

Changed the pump, accumulator, high pressure hoses, spark plugs and coil recently.

Next step for me is to try some injector cleaner, then test the injectors to see if they are all fine if that doesn't clear it up.

Then i'll check out the air pressure plate in the metering head.

Any other thoughts?

Hi Penny,

Thanks for the suggestions. Temperature sensor something i'll have a look at - could well be part of the issue.

Regarding ECU - I may be very dense here, but it used the Bosch K-jetronic fuel injection system, which I think is fully mechanical?

Hi, good questions!

From Cold it starts ok but rarely on the button. Normally needs a few seconds of turning over but there is some variance.

After 2 mins it starts much better, generally on the button.

After two hours after driving, that's when the issues I mentioned above occurs. It catches but sort of a 'half catch' where it's not really idling properly. After a few seconds, it returns to normal idle. Note this does not always seem to happen, but has happened a few times recently but never before.

What caused the ban?

I still don't fully understand how people who came together with a passion for weird cards end up falling out quite so much..

@KelvinatorNZ

Thanks for the thoughts and questions.

It's an 83 Series 1

The lumpiness has typically lasted for a few seconds before clearing. It revved a bit lumpy, but then caught and was fine.

I think based on the feedback here and a chat with Amore when I dropped it off i'm not going to worry about it too much. If it gets worse I'll check the injectors and the return valve but it happens so infrequently i'm not hugely worried.

Best,
J

Hi Penny,
It happens pretty reliably when warm - so in between 2-4 hours after driving.

Sensible suggestion - I'll do just that.
