Switched on 'ignition' today - rev counter showing max revs - any thoughts?

Was it on max revs before starting or did it fly up and stay there?

No - as soon as turn I on the ignition the dial goes straight round to max. Start the engine and it stays there

Pretty sure it's a pulse type. Wire from gauge to coil must be earthed some where. Check the wiring diagram to confirm.

Hi - managed to do some checks
Earth connection back of rev counter fine, continuity to earth
+ve feed fine
Continuity in the white / slate wire from counter to coil. You mentioned this wire may be earthing out. Yes there is continuity to earth ,however there is also continuity to earth on the -ve pole on the coil to where it is attached
Even with the wire to the coil completely removed from the back of the rev counter as soon as you switch on ignition the dial moves full deflection to 7000rpm - any further thoughts?

There are a few components inside the rev counter, sounds like perhaps one of those has gone caput.
However in the second instance as in this case, as you have done a fair bit of the what if stuff... I would remove all car-driven harness connections including the illumination lamp and run separate feed wires to the instrument.
If the problem persists then it is time to repair / replace.
If the problem goes away the problem exists in the harness, time to hunt the break. Or you could leave the wires in, however, I would hunt the break if it exists as this is a potential melt-to-fire hazard?

If you want to keep the original dial there are repair places on the Interweb.

Thanks for the replies
Thought as much - will begin the search for a replacement. I would have thought professional repair is probably not cost effective?

It's worth taking a look inside if you can get in, there could be a coil shorting to something or some other visible fault

I assume access is from the front?
I did remove the bezel to paint it some time back - not the easiest of things to get off
A company called Just Campers have them in stock - seem to be the cheapest though as they mainly deal with early VW campers their fitting instruction is for the feed to connected to the +ve on the coil as I assume they will be positive earth. If a car is -ve earth is it merely just connecting the feed to the -ve coil terminal?

Needs to be a v8 tacho.

A 4 cylinder tacho would show double the amount to revs.

I have bbeen helping someone else out with a V6 tacho recently.

Take it apart, first thing to change is the big electrolytic capacitor, get the best one you can in the same capacitance but maybe higher voltage speification.

If unsure, post up pictures here..

Decided to take the easier option
Found a company JDO instruments in West Yorkshire who will repair.
Spoke to Steve there and with symptoms said undoubtedly the chip had gone, so off to them for repair. Turn around time is 3 days
Looked at getting an new on but many now have LED back lighting as standard plus a 5 pin plug on the back, so therefore thought repair of the original to be perhaps the best option.
Thanks for all your advice
