Hi all,

Planning on coming home after 7yrs in Ireland. Having spent the last week or so looking at houses and areas with a span of West Newport in the east to Bridgend in the west and Lisvane in the North we have settled on Penarth, Wenvoe and Dinas. Wenvoe is slightly too quiet so will likely be dropped and Penarth looks to be too expensive for what we are looking for (4bed, period house with good garden for <£650k).

Any views on Dinas? I would think the old village is much more interesting as w looked at south of Cardiff road & Murch.

Opinions please (will likely need a rental property also given the challenges in getting a mortgage as an ex-pat).

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks all,

Firstly given that this is pistonheads TRY5T I was drooling over your Hurrucan parked outside the old custom house last week when we were over house hunting - absolutely stunning!

I will be working from home and therefore the commute on the Cardiff road is not an issue, I just need to be close to an airport for when life starts moving back to normal again. Main reason for Dinas over Wenvoe (and sully for that matter) is that we have a lovely big home here in Ireland but are very rural and the kids (10 & 13) are suffering from that and so we want access to kids their age. We had two viewings on a house in Wenvoe with a pool out the back ( you will know where it is) but there was, let me say a more of an older generation in this area. Sully also felt like we would be spending most of our lives in the car also.

I also have most of my family in penarth who have homes I can only dream of but having viewed a couple on Westbourne road they either are too much of a compromise from our position today or are too much of a stretch above the £650k max budget.

We concluded that Dinas village is the place to be as you can get more for your money and viewed a Victorian terrace there earlier this week before coming back to Ireland. Happy to be talked out of it to Wenvoe if you feel different!

As it looks we will need to rent first due to the ridiculous lending for non-UK residents so will have a chance to try it first. Any houses to rent in 3 months time that will accept 2 beagles (with an enhanced damage deposit to secure confidence)?

Hello all,

Thanks for all the replies and TRY5T I thought it was owned by a Welsh international rugby player ??.

I think Dinas is the place to be although we still have a soft spot for Wenvoe and have seen a (very) overpriced place with a pool there we think there is more life I Dinas as has been said. We
Like Penarth but the price premium and house downsize is offsetting the appeal - I cant afford Augusta road with the relatives unfortunately...

Sarnie is being a great help with mortgages as I am an expat but will duck in and ask questions when needed if that is okay?!

Sorry have been away for a while; really good to get some additional input to confirm that Dinas sounds like the right choice for us...

Pub and garage sounds great - I am limited by the crazy car costs here in ROI (paid €32k for my wife’s diesel qashqai 3 years ago...) so looking forward to getting something more interesting!

We seemed to have a run of houses hitting the market 2 months ago but it has slowed to a trickle and those that are left seem to be quite expensive for the village (and have been warned off the concrete ones on the common).

Sarnie on here is hopefully going to come good with the mortgage this week beer so we can be all guns blazing on the search.

Will for sure be in contact with those of you from or in the village to get that essential “inside knowledge “ on any purchases if that is okay wink

Short update - after much discussion over a Victorian property in the centre of Dinas that didn’t turn out to be what it looked like despite what the inventive EA insisted bandit Also nothing meeting our needs in Wenvoe either...both markets have slowed considerably in the last 2 months.

We after a short visit at the weekend (luckily in between lockdowns!) we had an offer accepted on a property in St Fagans bounce

I am sure I will be back with lots of questions in time!

Thanks for the input all - looking to get back to Wales beer
