I know this one has been dealt with before, but I'd like to get some opinions on the fitting company if possible.

Just taken the plunge to sort out a new windscreen from my insurance company, a the stone-chip in the drivers view will fail the MOT I'm told, and more importantly the delamination on the drivers side looks awful!

Edited to say that the subject should be Silvershield - ooops!

My insurer (Peart with Highway Motor Polocies at Lloyds) uses Silver Shield with the usual £50 excess

Of course I got the usual, ooh we don't have that car on the system, as they only have the Griffith onwards. But they've looked at their other system, and have on on order for next weke hopefully.

Has anyone had their screens done by these guys and if so were they OK? I spoke to the depot and he says he'll send his most experienced guy down due to the rarity of the car, but I'm still nervous.

Obviously I'll watch the fitter like a hawk, but is there anything in particular I should watch for or warn hiom about, and could he potentially cause any accidental damage?

Thanks in advance, Rob.

rev-erend said: I had silver shield do my Griff 500 and it was a 6 month nightmare...

My insurer was Peart and they would not allow anyone except Silvershield to do it...

I had such a bad experience - my complaint letter went to 2 pages with the details.

They might make a better job of the 'S' but if you have the option - take it to one of their fitting centres and 'borrow' their loaner car... and insist
on their best fitter. !

Might speak to Peart regarding getting a TVR specialist to do it, somehow I don't think they'll change their minds though

Which centre did you take yours to, the guys who'll be coming out to do mine are from the Croydon one.

Gonna go for Silvershield, what the hell!

Double-checked this morning that it is a green tinted screen, and they're fitting it next Tuesday.

Will report when done....

Silvershield guys turned up this morning, took them around the back, open up the garage, and got a "That's not a wedge shaped one!". They explained that they'd had similar problems before with exotics, as the office staff have no idea, and their database doesn't list them very well.

So I'm waiting for another screen....

But, these two guys did seem to know what they were doing, and spent 10 minutes looking at what they'll have to do when they return. The way they spoke, and explained how careful they needed to be, has made me a lot more confident about the fitting.

Will report on the results..

Well, the guys turned up again, with the correct screen by Pilkington XXX, great green tint, with a darker top band.

Stripped out the previous scree, took around 1.5 hours to do that alone, then cleaned up the remaining adhesive, while I had a pop at the top of the dash with Autoglym leather cleaning stuff.

Then he started to fit the new screen, but straight away he spotted it was the wrong size, about an inch awry at the bottom in the middle the dash area!

So, the current screen has been left in, so the adhseive doesn't drip everywhere, and it's had some pads put in to make it easy to remove.

Waiting for a different branded one now... Thankfully it's a garaged third car, and the previous replies here made me expect this sort of thing!

Ho hum.

Nah, was Pilkington XXX glass, don´t know where the next lot is coming from, as I´m doing this via the insurance 50 quid option and not the 400+ dealer or independent option I have no choice.

Any more problems and I will try to insist on proper TVR glass though.

trefor said: How damaged does the screen need to be before they will replace it under insurance? Mines got a nasty bunch of scratchs in the line of sight and millions of small chips. I think the scratches might be an MOT failure (I'll know on Thursday when it's in for it's service/MOT).

I'd like to get mine replaced, but don't really want to take a hammer to it IYKWIM.
Don't reckon the fitters or their companies give a monkies, as long as they get their money from your insurance company. The bad scratch on mine could be repaired, they asked whether the scratch was bigger than 15mm (I think), and I said yes, knowing that it was borderline, but the fitters agreed that the de-laminated bit was ugly, and as his brother-in-law has a Chimaera, he was fine about it.

I'd wager that when the insurers do an inspection that any borderline screens they have removed are attacked with the aforementioned hammer!

Just spoke to Silvershield and they've ordered (and have ready) another Pilkington XXX screen.

They reckon the other one being wrong is a manufacturing fault, I'll be by annoyed if it turns out to be wrong in exactly the same places.

Anyone know the waiting time for factory-supplied S screens?

Well, the fitting was cancelled from Tuesday, and moved to today, as their top fitter who's been attending to it was ill.

Then, arrives today, checks the windscreen he has in the van (another Pilkington XXX in green but without the top shading) before bonding, and was wrong in the same areas again

Oh well, a good chance to re-fit the leather on the A-pillar and clean the top of the dash and the vents I guess...

Gonna do some calling around this afternoon to see if anyone else has the screens.

Made some calls this afternoon, the factory told me they had none, and that I should go through a dealer for parts, not direct to them.

Penninsular don't have any screens in stock right now, but told me that they sourced theirs from RAC Autowindscreens at 140+vat trade, and did one quite recently.

Interestingly they had seen exactly the same fault with windows as I'm getting now, as the guy I spoke to guessed before I mentioned it! He also mentioned that in the past they have had to use specialist glass-cutters to adjust the windscreens to fit the S He mentioned that it was a messy job, and afterwards they spent ages neatening things up - no s^&t!

My nearest TVR servicer, Walldonway, have none, but will order from the factory, or obtain them from another dealer.

Also heard that TVR had a plentiful supply of S windscreens last year, but moved them outside (to make space for T350s I guess or a little bit of the ) and they de-laminated and went milky!!! Ooops.

However, on a positive note, spoke to Silvershield later this afternoon, and they've had to do a specialist order from the TVR Centre, and I might get a screen next week Just in time to escape from my in-laws

Slightly annoying mind you, but at least the feedback I received here had me expecting the worst

Psychobert said: Having the same fun with the same glass company and insurer right now.. Fair enough they can't fit the screen outside when its raining, but they could have at least phoned me to let me know they weren't coming..
Simon,

Get your centre to call Graham at the Croydon office (020 8683 3338) and discuss their problems, mention that you too would like a proper TVR screen that the one they've ordered for me from the TVR Centre.

Hopefully you'll shortcut all the problems I've had...

Proper TVR Windscreen is now ordered, but ETA is not known.

I'm hoping I'll have it back for this weekend, it's a month to the day since this debacle began...

Still waiting. A screen has been ordered (although Silvershield cannot find the details of who from, they say a dealer near Guildford, but the dealers know nothing of it!).

I'm now calling around everywhere to see if I can source a screen, as having shouted at Highway Insurance they've said they'll cover the cost to get it done elsewhere.

Otherwise, it'll probably be another two weeks

Christ, not good at all - how visible is the gash from inside and out?

Three very minor gashes occured when they removed mine, caused when they removed the bonding on the inside, as presumably the blade was a little to horizontal and just nicked the leather a little.

All of which fortunately get covered by the black rim, although I've patched them up while waiting, and couldn't spot them when I had the ill-fitting screen in temporarily, but even I know that they are there

Sureley, on reflection they could insert a plastic sheet of some kind between dash and winscreen, ensuring that the knife's travel is limited

Anyone know how much re-trimming just the top of the dash might cost?

Any hints on removing the black gloop will come in handy I reckon though..

Hope you enjoy you Sunday blat mind! Have a chance to relax, then reflect on what to do to sort the damage out.

After speaking to almost every TVR dealer and specialist yesterday I finally have two leads.

One potential for proper TVR badged glass, another definite for unbadged.

I'll find out Monday morning about badged, then move ahead to sort it out, after getting faxed confirmation from the insurer that they'll reimburse me.

Edited to add: Given that I've spoken to the parts department of almost every TVR outfit now, I've got to say how great all these people are, all were exceptionally friendly offering advice and further leads, as well as offering to badger the factory to supply new screens.

At long last this saga is over - I have a screen fitted

No ing, in fact a very fine job was done, and thankfully the black window borders cover up the small bit of damage caused to the dash top when the screen was removed.

Of course it started raining as I approached home after picking up the replacement screen, and I really should let the bonding dry for 24 hours, but when I'm back home on Thursday to drive it, it'll be like the first time over again

As I spent two days of my own time calling around everyone who has something to do with TVR to discover facts that the windscreen "experts" were oblivious to, I'll be writing stern letters of complaint to all companies involved , in the hope that future TVR claims are directed straight to the specialists who are capable of the job and can give realistic quotes of order times based on their relationship with the factory.

THE END
