Actually it's quite a daft idea.

The Sprint is an engine looking for a car, and the TR7 is a car looking for an engine.

Better to try to make a Broadside or Lynx out of a TR7 and fit the AJP in that.

Just my twopennuth.

Hi Gavin,

I'm a bit lost. Where does a TR7 come into this particular equation? It's a Dolomite Sprint that currently has a stag lump.

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Gavin,

I totally agree that the Sprint engine is perfect in a Sprint. I'd be stupid not to as I race one in the CTCRC. They can be quite fragile engines though at the 200+ bhp range and need careful treatment. Having had 2 bearing failures this year on the bottom end, I know this as well!

But, a Dolomite weighs less than a TR7 in road trim and I believe with decent bushes and shock absorbers, they can handle very well. Aerodynamics aren't great but lets be honest, unless you are going to do high speed runs, it's not really a factor.

Phil loves Dollies which is why he wants to do something with the immaculate shell he has built up over the last few years. He likes his projects and the AJP V8 route hasn't beeen done before.

I believe his Stag engine is being relocated back into a Stag so from the purist point of view, some balance is being returned!

It's good to hear someone with a different perspective so please don't think I'm trying to 'shoot you down'!

Crank bearing failures do seem to be one of the more common failures on race engines. You are absolutely right in asserting that it is an oil feed issue. The engine now has a redesigned larger winged sump, directly copied from an old Group 2 racing sump from the 70's. The pick up is positioned differently as well.

Ken's son was having a number of bearing failures (or so he told me a few months ago). Can't remember what it was in his case. I think it was an incorrect oil filter with a shortage of holes in the caretridge.

Thanks for the advice. If this one fails again I'll need that number!

Thought you guys might be interested to know that Darren, the owner of the dolly with the Cosworth engine did a 185mph run at Bruntingthorpe today WITHOUT using the Nitrous!

I'll pass on your comments. They are a good bunch of people and the Lamours who run Sprintparts down there have got some excellent tuning goodies for Sprints. They have been racing sprints for over 20 years so they have learnt a thing or two in that time!

Hi,

I'm new to the club and only managed Thruxton and Brands this year due to a re-occurring spun bearing problem. Hopefully, a newly designed larger sump will help the situation for 2006.

BTW, darren is selling the Sprint with a standard cossie engine and smaller turbo. Reckons it will still put out 350bhp.

What do/did you race?

Yes, I had a pretty crap day. Forgot to check tyre pressures before practice. After practice found they were 40 something psi cold! Had never done a lap of Thruxton and managed 4 before the Firenza went into the tyre wall and red flagged the whole lot. Went out on the walming up lap only to hear the engine making a dreadful knocking noise and no power! Straight into the pits and no race. Saved the engine though. Just one conrod and knackered crank broken.

I know one or two people teetering on the edge of wanting to race so if you want to pm me some specs and price, I'll put the word around. I've seen pictures of your car before. Hard to forget in the distinctive colours! Are you racing elsewhere (tophat?) or something totally different?

Don't know how I missed all the recent hand-bagging.

Well we all know that the Dolly Sprint is the best TR!!! , that's why the Tr Register and TSSC were a bit on the reluctant side when I wanted to race with them. Apparently, a Dolly Sprint isn't a Sports car. I couldn't really argue with that! Not that I would now as from what I have seen and heard, certain drivers seem to think they are being scouted for F1 and are regularly clobbering each other off the track.

Sorry for the thread hijack Phil but I had to get in on this! Steve Small's TR7 car won his class this year and that's got a nice Sprint engine in it!

My point was that I couldn't argue with that. It is a touring car but since when has a herald coupe or vitesse been a sports car?!

I mistakenly thought that with dwindling grid sizes and clubs clamouring for a greater market share that they would look at the spirit of the car rather than the fact that it has 4 doors!

Never mind. I'm with the CTCRC now where the dolly sprint still wins races (admittedly not my car!)

Have you spoke to Ken Clarke? I hear he was trying to source a car for someone. No idea of what money would be on the table.

Good luck with it anyway. Like you say, too many toys. HAd to let a couple go myself.

Wouldn't happen to have a CR or wide ratio gearset for sale in that lot would you?
