I'm looking to change rear rotors and pads, I have heard removing the carrier (using M14 spline) can be a real pig. Has anyone done it without a ramp? It's the same as the mk5/mk6 golf GTi I believe. Thanks, pp

If it's the same as my dads old MK5 Golf, the rear disc can be changed without the removal of the carrier.

Thanks Stevie but I believe the GTI/vRS have larger rear discs and different carriers

Could be same design though, as these still had that huge spline bolt which was a nightmare to remove......made worse when I realised it didnt even need to be removed !! lol

I did mine on my driveway. The thing that worked in the end was an 18" breaker bar that I could turn within the wheel arch but it was hard work.

I also used some proper one piece spline bits as the first attempt was with one which fitted into a standard socket and that didn't last long...

I've done this job. I recall with the wheel off and therefore suspension unloaded the upper arm prevented access to the bolts. I.e. there wasn't space for the spline socket to fit.

So I had to reverse the car up the ramps to loosen the bolts from underneath, even then there wasnt much space to turn the breaker bar. Then i took the car off the ramps to get the wheels off to remove the bolts to change the discs.
