Car rock chip rust protection until i get home
Discussion
Hi i need some help with a rock chip on my bonnet and need a way to stop it from rusting until i get home to my garage.
im currently on holiday for the rest of the week in isle of wight. The place i an staying is near the beach so the salt content in the air is very high so it will rust quicker.
tge chip is down to bare metal and has been like this for 1-3 days.
i wanted to know if there was any methods or any thing i can use to prevent rust till i get home.
i need to know now as i have onky just bought the car and dont want more work later on.
Thanks. Yours sincerely Josh.

I used to swear by a blob of nail varnish back in the day. I can't think of the last car I had that didn't have an aluminium bonnet, at least, so it has been quite the pressing issue it once was.im currently on holiday for the rest of the week in isle of wight. What do you mean by wax as in burning a candle and dripping on the chip or another kind of wax.
And i also assume ill be able to wipe it of with a bit of ipa right?
Noooo, he meant bee's wax, or surfboard wax.... Or at a push, earwax. And i also assume ill be able to wipe it of with a bit of ipa right?
Definitely not candlewax, or car wax....
A blob of vaseline over the chip will protect the metal until you get home or (provided that it isn't washed off) indefinitely.
Rust is a chemical process caused when steel is exposed to oxygen and moisture. If you can prevent it from being exposed (grease is a good moisture barrier) the process cannot occur. A blob of grease even over an existing rust spot (assuming that the surface you are covering is where the rust is occuring) will stop it from getting any worse. In fairness, candle wax would probably do the same job but it'll be far harder to remove and probably harder to ensure sufficient coverage.

Apologies for the thread resurrection. Years ago I was repairing a dented wing on a late 70s japanese car and the body filler was a proper challenge to fettle into the right shape. As it was getting late and with exposed bare metal I sprayed over the whole lot with waxoyl and left it until I had time to go back to it again. It worked in stopping the bare metal rusting for a few weeks.
