Congratulations!

I'm coming over to Perth on a year working Visa in August, cannot wait!

Hoping to find a job in Motorsport as that is what i do now and what my degree is in, but their isnt much going on in WA so it may be a struggle!

Whats your job in Stefan?
Thanks. I'm in IT Security, job is working for an IT Service Provider on one of their major accounts, I'll be based down in the CBD.

I'm looking at whether to bring my Vauxhall VXR8 over, it's got a Harrop HH1900 Supercharger and I'm quite attached to it, I think cost wise by the time I've paid shipping costs and import duty it's not a million miles away from what I could get a normal HSV Clubsport R8 for locally. I am aware how potentially 'license loosing' the policing is over there so I'm also contemplating just getting something like a Toyota FJ Cruiser instead locally.

I haven't really looked at how much goes on at the Barbagallo Raceway so I couldn't advise on your side of things. I assume there is other motorsport venues around WA?

Well done guys. Let us know when you get here and if you need any help at all.

Even if it's just to have a few jars once you get here.
Thanks mate, will definitely be in touch once we land, shame we couldn't meet up a couple of weeks ago, was a manic couple of days, I hope your Friday at the cider farm was fruitful wink

Thanks for the offer of help though much appreciated to know it's there if required.

Yeah thanks guys. I think the plan is to sell it here in the UK now and then see what I fancy when I come over. By the time I pay the car off and ship it and import it it's getting in to silly money, as much as I want to keep the car!

AUD ..

I can send you some screen shots if you like? They were on a closed VE club facebook group, you have to prove you are a VE owner before they let you join.
Cheers for those, will have a look.

Bring warm clothes. Its fecking cold here at the moment once the sun goes down.

No double glazing, no real heating and minimal insulation making the majority of houses a bit chilly in the winter!

What suburbs are you looking at?
Yeah, some friends are keeping me appraised of the weather!

We are looking at the North, maybe Mindarie, Kinross etc, left hand side of Marmion.

Left side of Marmion is a good idea. I lived in Hillarys for a year and then moved up to Mindarie.

Hillarys:

Lovely established suburb with a lot of middle aged and older couples. Its convenient for everything and 25 minutes from the city at the weekend. The harbour is a nice place if you fancy lunch out at the weekend and Sorrento beach is really nice for kids etc. in the summer. There's a great sheltered beach at the harbour for very young kids. It had the feeling of a place where you could leave the house un-locked and it'd probably be OK.

Free poo bags in the parks mean that owners pick it up, the whole place was clean and tidy.

$620 per week rent got us a 4 bed 2 bath house in a cul-de-sac, backing onto a nature reserve, tiny tiny garden.

Houses that came up for sale sold very quickly, regardless of size.

Mindarie:

We walk our dog all over the suburb every night of the week and never before have I found such a high concentration of loud parties. On EVERY street within 10 minutes walk of our house there is one you wouldn't want to live next to. Some of them have a party every couple of weeks whilst for others it's once a month, but it's always the same houses. One in particular plays their music so loud you can still hear it 3-4 minutes after you've walked past.

We've had semi-naked people fighting in the street, the police knock at the door to ask if we saw "what happened last night", the irrigation system in the front lawn vandalised, the park is full of dog poo and there is noticeably more rubbish around the place. We've had three shopping trolleys dumped outside too.

It's also a long way from the city, culture, Ikea, the airport etc. Traffic is a nightmare getting anywhere during the week between 6AM and 10AM or at home-time. I start work at 5:30 (half way between Mindarie and the city) and the journey takes 18 minutes. If I try to get to work for 8 I have to leave the house before 7:10!

The beaches are nice but there is a lot more seaweed that gets washed up when compared to Sorrento/Hillarys. There is also a very sudden drop-off so you go from knee deep to shoulder deep in 3 steps!

$600 per week rent gets us a 5x2 2 storey house with a big garden and a sea view (its still a 5 minute walk to the beach).

Small houses sell quickly but anything other than that stays on the market for a long, long time. One near us has been reduced from $1.6m to $900k in the last 10 months and is still un-sold. A friend had her's on the market for 2 years before it sold. I think a lot of people moved up there when the land was cheap so they could build a mansion for very little. Now they're trying to sell, its apparent why the land was cheap in the first place.

If our first child wasn't due the same week our lease expires I wouldnt be staying around for another year but I just cant justify moving house whilst dealing with a new addition to the family. In 12 months we'll be looking to buy and it wont be in Mindarie.

For us, the desirable area is to the left of Marmion and stretches from Mullaloo to the north to Trigg to the south.

Be careful in Kinross. There is a notorious party house there which pops up on the news every so often ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5WM_8yY4Rs). The northern side could also be a bit smelly thanks to the Tamala Park refuse site/rubbish dump. I often drive past there per 6AM and late evening and it stinks, presumably they release gasses to atmosphere whilst the majority of people are tucked up in bed.

On the noise front, we have noticed that it's often possible to spot a potentially noise house by the cars that are normally on the driveway. Multiple hilux or land cruiser pickups, Holden Commodore ute, Commodore clubsport, any commodore more than 10yrs old, anything with a personal plate along the lines of "avin a laff", "pisstup", "bogan10" or "avvitttt", multiple older cars or tradesman's vehicles parked on the verge outside or on the vacant block next door - Any of these would prevent me from moving in next door.

Spotting a quiet house by the cars on the driveway is a little more difficult because they tend to be kept in the garage. However, anything big and new with front-wheel drive that was made in Korea or Japan along with recent BMW, Mercedes or Alfa Romeo tend to appear outside quiet places.

I forgot to mention the music that's played loudly during the day at weekend whilst people was their car, do the housework or sit around in the garden. I dont remember the last weekend where we diddnt have to listen to someone else's music whilst outside.

There is a short version of my earlier post.......... Dont move to Mindarie, it's horrible. Move to somewhere between Mullaloo and Trigg
Cheers, out of interest, do you know the area just below Abbeville Park? Kind of bottom corner of Marmion and Anchorage Drive? Is that as bad?

The area bounded by Rochester Drive, Rothesay Heights, Marmion Ave and Anchorage Drive (South) is where most of the smaller Mindarie housing is. We actually went to a house there last night to pick up some baby clothes we found on Gumtree. The people seemed lovely and had also moved from the UK a couple of years ago. The primary school is apparently good.

I've no other personal experience of that particular area.

The west side of Rothesay heights is where the larger houses are but as per my earlier post, dont take that to mean it's a better place to live.

We live between Mindarie Senior College (Anchorage Drive north) and the beach and our dog walks take us through the northern 50% of Mindarie, down to Rothesay Heights/Fairport Vista.

If you're considering moving to Mindarie, I can give you a list of the noisy streets!
Phil, I'd really appreciate that, could you drop me the info by PM? I have friends that lived in the area I mentioned and stayed with them last year and I quite liked that particular area as it's close to the Marina. I didn't really experience the other areas of Mindarie so I'd appreciate some pointers.

How long until the baby is due?
