I have an idea that could make life easier for those of us who don't use our cars in the winter and could save the DVLA money, but I have found it impossible to speak to anyone at the DVLA who can do anything about it. I spoke to someone there who suggested the gov.uk website, but I couldn’t find anywhere on that website where I could make a suggestion. Perhaps the government doesn’t want to receive suggestions from the general public, but if that isn’t correct, there is no obvious way to go about it other than via one’s MP, so that is what I have done

My suggestion is, I hope, relatively simple. The only current options for car tax are 12 or 6 months, so I, again like many, tax my car for 12 months, then declare a SORN and DVLA sends me a cheque for the balance. Now that there is no tax disc and everything is done electronically, it seems to me that it would be a simple task for the DVLA to offer tax for say 8 or 9 months (8 would probably suit many people, but 9 would get the DVLA more money) and then there would be no need for a SORN and no need for the DVLA to send cheques out.

A good idea?

you can already do that , simply select 12 months pay monthly by DD, then SORN when you want to and the DD stops
Simple as that eh? The person to whom I spoke at DVLA didn't suggest it.
(Well that's my first ever post delat with in two hits)

In case anyone is concerned, my MP forwarded my suggestion to the Department of Transport which responded several months later by telling me what the current system is without any acknowledgment of my suggestion. Civil servants apparently do not like change. Anyway, I have taken the advice of those above and have taxed my car by DD and will cancel it when the frosts come.

Completely redeveloping the VED systems isn't a decision civil servants can take. WAY above their pay grade. It'd require political will.
"Political won't" then
