Kenwood Garmin map updates - help please

Kenwood DNX7230DAB head unit, 2013.
Map update now available from Garmin, so followed the instructions:
SD card into unit, press "update map"
Xml file transferred to sd card (8gb card)
Insert card into pc, garmin express opens and registers the unit.
Follow map update link, pay £50
System downloads maps onto sd card
Insert card back into kenwood unit.
Doesn't transfer maps. Unit just says "reading device" and stays like that for 3 hours, with engine running ffs.
Phone garmin. Hour later, after checking structure and type of files downloaded, they cannot help. Say contact Kenwood.
Try that. All their help links for this unit lead back to garmin.
Garmin refund my £50
I still have the downloaded files.

Solved. If anyone else has this problem, the new map and associated files are too big for the Kenwood storage, 7.7gb. The map has to be activated on an sd card and the head unit set to read the map from the sd, not from its own memory; so the card has to be left permanently in the unit.
