I’m using a Road Angel Gem at the moment but it’s a bit bulky and fiddly to connect the wire when returning to the car.

I was thinking of upgrading to the new Pure but some of the reviews on Amazon are not great. Has anybody here tried a Pure?

I've asked the same question I guess nobody on here has one. I have had a less than pleasant experience with my latest Gem + the display went really dim and the battery went too.
Sent it back to RA only to be told it was not worth repairing and was offered a Pure at a discount.
Having been a RA owner for nearly 20 odd years with no problems I was well fed up with the Gem + experience and didn't take up the offer.
I've tried all of the phone based systems and don't like them so I'd like a Pure but not sure if the new company are up to giving good customer service.
Interesting, how old was your Gem+ ?

Just over a year when the trouble first started.
No wonder you were peed off,I’d have been livid. I have the Road Angel in one car and a Cheetah in the TVR.

The Road Angel’s subscription will need doing soon and I’m not sure I want to pay them another £100 on an old bit of kit.

I have a pure and have had road angels from day one and can say without doubt the pure is excellent !

The screen is superb day and night, The screen change when you "Over-speed" is great as is the screen,

The only problem or fail point is it only really sits on a flat surface unlike the older ones that the bases allowed the head unit to tilt,

But i would give it 9 out of 10.

Btw i have two gems fail.
You mean it falls off of the ‘Smart Mount’? My Gem is at an angle so that could be a real problem.

Glad to hear an owners point of view on the Pure I'm reluctantly considering one but my last experience with the Gem + has really hacked me off.
You could pick up a used Gem+ on EBay? Presumably you already have the wiring and mount in place.

Your story reminds me that Road Angel also brought out the Pogo which was a fantastic product until all of the screens went black and could not be read. frown

That's encouraging, lets hope the Gem+ problem was a blip in an otherwise useful bit of kit with a very long history of being up to the job.
The Pogo was another blip by the same company. It was a great bit of kit until the screen went black and couldn’t be seen. That happened to ALL of them,

I can't fathom why anyone would bother with spending the money on these units when you can just use waze for free on your smartphone. Are they that much more accurate?
The last time I tried Waze it didn’t warn me of fixed speed cameras and didn’t stream properly through my BMW car radio.

Because I’ve used Road Pilot, now Road Angel, for 20 point-free 40k mile years ... roll on the next 20 and blissful retirement!
Similar here.

I’d love to find an app that would do the same but having tried CamerAlert, TomTom app and Waze I have to say that none worked well through the car.

If I could solve this I wouldn’t need the Road Angel on the dashboard.

I agree I've tried the apps and can't get on with them, probably just me.
I was offered a Pure from RA for £149 but declined due to the Gem+ problems. I'm prepared to wait a while and see if there are any reported problems from new owners.
I have used RA products for longer than I care to remember and can confirm what others have said regarding their effectiveness.
No, it’s definitely not just you not getting on with apps. I reckon they’re probably ok if you keep your phone in a cradle on the dashboard but that’s messy to me.

The Sunday Times seems to like the Pure:-

Did the £149 include any subscription?

Well having given all the various phone based apps a try I have concluded they are just not for me.
So seeing this today I phoned and ordered one, bearing in mind my old unit was sent to them some time ago having died on me. Of course I still had my details held with them so I bought a Pure at £150.00 plus 2 years subscription.
Hopefully now I can look forward to a further 15 years of scamera set ups being perfectly highlighted as have the past 15 years.
I’m interested to hear how you get on with it. How much was the subscription?

How well does the RA database keep up with mobile cameras?
I’d say very well indeed, never had a problem with the database.

OK my Road Angel Pure turned up today earlier than predicted, what I nice piece of kit, the box reminded me of my iPhone and the unit feels solid and very well made. The display is very clear and I like the way its connected to the phone too.
I have no doubt whatsoever it'll be up to the job as the units in the past have, of course it's early days but the all in all I'm very pleased with its purchase.
That’s encouraging, let’s hope you feel the same after using it for a while.

Had a full day with the Pure today and I'm pleased. Just one thing which I didn't realise is the fact there is no facility to report a mobile camera like the Gem had. So I sent an e-mail to enquire if it had this feature, the answer was as I expected, no. So it would appear that you have to inform RA of its potential location. So this to me is a negative mark against the Pure. I will send it's location to update the database but unless owners make the effort to do this there could be a gapping hole in the network.
A step backwards which is a shame.

Was the setup easy? Some of the feedback on Amazon suggests otherwise with reports of failures and long delays in speaking with RA customer support.

I also had a Gem, and the screen packed up after 2 years. Took RA''s offer of reduced price on a Pure, and they transferred the remains year of my subscription.
The Pure is OK, but not that accurate on its positioning. Several places on M40, M1, A34 etc when it picks up cameras on nearby roads and tells me the limit is 30.

Main problem though is the dash mount. Cornering "enthusiastically" in my Porsche results in the Pure ending up in the footwell, often under the brake pedal.

Road Angel say it is tested under such conditions. I suggested they need a faster test driver.

Nutsy
My detector prior to the Pogo had a similar problem. I hope RA can get it right.

You're absolutely right about its mounting not being able to hold the unit. I tried it on the top of my dashboard initially but after it flew through the two front seats under acceleration I had to place it at an angle on the steering wheel cover.
I have also found the accuracy of its positioning to be suspect too, it keeps displaying side road limits on the motorway and a few camera sites that I know have never been used. I guess it is a case of letting RA know these things and hope for a sensible reply.
I remember now. I had an Origin B2 which had a similar problem, brake hard or take a corner ‘enthusiastically’ and it flew from its cradle.

Hope they get the Pure right.

Well you've had the Pure for a few weeks now. Any more thoughts and did you solve the mounting issue?

I just got a letter from RA offering the Pure for £149 so I'm guessing they're not selling like hot cakes.
