Saw one in the flesh today. Its a very nice looking car and better in real life than any pictures. Wasnt sure about it before we saw it , but the wife seems pretty smitten by it. We werent supposed to see it, but they didnt hide it very well at the dealers, as the launch date is Thursday this week. Seems sizewise not much in it between our XC60 and this, other than a lower roofline . Bonnet/ front end is shorter . Was in a metallic grey and black R design roof.
We are heading to the launch on Thursday , as there is a draw for wining one . Yes, I win nothing, but if you want to go to your local dealer and enter then you need to go to www.xc40event.co.uk and book your code to enter.

They are nice, but the price is
T5 first editions are well north of €70k here, which is frankly far too much for its segment/class.
The R design first edition here was £38k , which is 2k less than my last of the old XC60's new and about £6k to £8k less than the next XC60 of the same loaded spec.T5 first editions are well north of €70k here, which is frankly far too much for its segment/class.
We had a D4 R design to look at which we actually quite liked. A bit more compact than the 60 widthwise. All the T5 first editions sold out before the evening started. So if we want one it would be a T5 with speccing up, which means some bits wont be on it for the same price. A few cheap trimming noted. We found the new shape XC60 seemed huge in comparison to our current end of last range one. Going to go for a test drive soon. An no one knows if they won the new car as the system didnt work at our dealer.

I guess you had the D4 , as the T5's are already gone. What colour did you go for ? We are still waiting on Volvo to come back to us on a deal at the moment.
Yes D4, which i was going for in the 60 anyway. Only annoyance is its with 19's as they've run out of 20's but as I'm leasing I'm not 'as' fussed.Gone for Osmium Grey, which was also what I was going for in the 60. Just think it contrasts well.
The interior isn't a patch on the 60 IMO as the 60 feels more luxurious but the spec of the 40 just did it for me.
Annoyingly I am yet to get a test drive from our dealer . I even emailed him last weekend and nothing. Bit annoying to be honest. Although on another note, went for a spin in my MD's 90 T8 today. God thats just massive . Not sure why he needed it Polestar'd too, but with 90 miles on the clock we werent going to try it at full chat.
Well the wife called the dealer up last week and said we wanted a test drive. He wasnt fussed , which is a bit rude. They said they cant get any cars for probably next year now , as their quota is all gone. Seems that if your pcp runs out with Volvo before the date of an xC40 can be delivered, they are loaning you a car. Not sure what model.
So.................. we are going to have a look at the E Pace as well........... since they arent 'fussed' by my custom.............

JLR dealers are worse than Volvo dealers in my experience so don’t get too hopeful. You’ll end up paying £10k more for the equivalent spec E-Pace.So.................. we are going to have a look at the E Pace as well........... since they arent 'fussed' by my custom.............
My wife is loving her FD T5. Try calling a couple of other dealer or using CarWow to find which ones are keen to engage.
Did a bit of car searching today . Looked at the E pace. Seems very cramped in the front and almost claustrophobic. Boot wont fit the dog cage in. So looked at the F pace and that was too big. Also the paint on the cars were really bady rippled from heat used to dry them when painted. Seemed pretty poor for a car upwards of 40 grand. So, went to Mazda and looked at the CX 5 . New version with later front end. Didnt like it . Cage will fit in the boot. Not quite a 'premium' product , but shows in the price , i guess. Then went to Mercedes and had a look at the GLC. Its damn nice. Cage fits in with mm to spare. Very nice, but the price says that. Going to have a test drive in a couple of weeks , but being honest a bit over our price point.
So, we went for a drive in the XC40. Was a really nice car. Pretty impressed. Gearbox and engine seemed smoother than our XC60 , even though its the same one , as they put the new engines in the last of the old xc60 range , except added addblue to it. Tested a D4 car R design with panoramic roof. Certain engines like the T5 are short of/ non existent until probably next year, but we could if we went T4 non R design get a car in November. Driving on a dual carriage way and having the car steer and control the throttle was a strange experience , but something we probably wouldnt order . Wife seems keen, but although we priced the car up and got an immediate 2 grand discount, we will take some time to think about it.
