I am seriously looking at one as a 2nd car/commuter hack...I had been looking at VAG diesels until I saw how cheap D5s could be snapped up for (sub £3k)

what sort of MPG do you guys get from yours?

just to add.... do you have any idea how many non-English speakers are selling S60 D5s on Autotrader?
it has been a nightmare trying to find a one with a owner that can communicate over the phone

590 miles into my S60 D5 SE ownership

stereo is superb (13 speaker ProLogic upgrade)
comfort is superb
performance is very surprising tbh (in a VERY GOOD WAY)
Fuel economy is amazing, 590miles on the first tank and still more to go
handling is very good and nice and positive through the corners
brakes are amazing

overall I'm very pleased with her

I did a lot of research before buying mine and from what I read the pre 2004 ones are better...they don't have the DPF issues that the later Euro4 ones have

just a little update to say, after playing about with the stereo settings I can really see/hear what all the fuss is about with the Dolby Pro-Logic 13 speaker system cloud9

Done 44k miles in my late-06 S60 D5/Geartronic in the last 3 years. Brilliant motor car and best seats in the house. Economy - logged across all those miles on an actual refill basis has been 36.2mpg average. That includes some fairly spirited driving. Genuine 40mpg, or close, is achievable with a bit of decorum..............but the D5 does ask to be used.

The new S60 is an absolute cracker. See post headed "New S60........WOW" for very brief note of "S60 Naughty Track Day".
I have the same engine and get similar figures....I think the point is that the previous generation D5 with less emissions issues is a more economical.
The Euro III is far better then the later Euro IV.

Also a manual helps by quite a bit as well.
yes

I'm seriously considering one of these as a daily runner. I was thinking about something fairly quick and petrol, but with the ever increasing fuel costs I think a diesel would be a good move.

I have up to £4.5k and want a well specced EuroIII model with good history. Facelift would be good if possible. Although I know mileage isn't a major issue if well maintained, I'm hoping I can get something below 100k for my budget.

There seem to be precious few about (at least in my area) at the moment, but I guess the dust hasn't settled after xmas for people to be thinking much about selling cars.

Is the wonderful Dolby Pro-Logic stereo standard in the SE model, or was it optional?

How do owners find the cost of servicing etc? I'm guessing a good local indy would be best, if I can locate one - any recommendations? (I'm in East Devon)
you will be surprisingly impressed with the Performance, have you driven a D5 before?
I never thought I'd be enthusing about a Diesel engine but they really are that good
as a daily driver it really is superb, I'm over the moon with mine (considering I bought it as a "hack" and it has ended up firmly replacing my T5 as my main car speaks volumes)

the cabin layout is very good with a few nice touches and thought put into things, the seats are as you'd expect with a Volvo (very comfortable)
you will get a good EuroIII with your budget

I may be wrong but this is how I read it when I was researching ahead of buying mine = the Dolby Pro-logic was part of the SE spec BUT the 13 speaker upgrade was an option (7 speakers were the std Dolby pro-logic) so make sure it has all 13 speakers if it is advertised as a 13 speaker one

try and get one with parking sensors too

as for servicing costs
I have a good friend that does my servicing if/when I don't fancy getting the spanners out so can't really comment of the prices to "Joe public"

edit to add
I'll PM you with the low down on remapping, once you've driven a mapped D5 you will never look back

it really is the best of both worlds.

I picked this up last week for £3150, came serviced with a new cambelt and 12 months MoT. Its an S spec but comes with the 4 disc changer and leather, only thing its missing is ACC but its no biggy.

Very impressed so far I've come from a Saab 9000 so it was difficult to find anything as comfortable! I managed 620 miles from a tank without the light coming on, averaging 44.4mpg by my own calculations, no trip computer to work it out for me but by the sounds of things they're fairly inaccurate anyway!

Its always reassuring to see a car just like yours with nearly twice the mileage on it of mine! Can I ask what you paid for it?

Where did you get the ipod adapters from guys? Is it for the HU803 stereo?
these things are solid...good for 200k easy yes
don't let mileage bother you, it is what these are made for.

as for the I-pod adaptors, I have no idea..sorry

Just joined the ranks of s60 D5 owners.

Took an 02 s60 d5 s in p/x when I sold my MY09 V70 D5.

Not alot to go wrong, its the 160 bhp euro III which makes me happy.

It needs a good clay and wax first but will post some pics ASAP. Also have a very long run for work tomorrow so will report back on fuel economy.

Feels nippy enough to be honest, quite surprised. Its certainly a ways off the grunt available from the new D5 engine, but I dont feel short changed in anyway.
smile good stuff

I was very surprised the first time I drove one...I've never driven a Diesel like it tbh cool

I look forward to the pictures..what colour did you go for?

It's usually one or at a push two injectors that go. This one had one changed, but unless it's causing immediate problems the symptoms are poor starting.

Honestly few weak points on these;

Control arms (front suspension bushes) are usually the most immediate if higher miles, that's in my experience and mine do need doing.

Oh and handbrake shoes ( I need to do mine too)
rear drop-links too...but they are soooo easy/cheap to replace they are hardly worth mentioning

............ the only problem I have is that playing really bass heavy tracks cause the doors to rattle a bit more than I would like. hehe Solution is to turn it up louder.
mine was doing that too....until I took the pens out of the door pockets wink

The ASC level automatically adjusts the volume of the stereo with the speed of the car. You can adjust how much it varies by. There are a couple of other things you can adjust, the list is here: http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/2002/2002_S60/...

I would prefer a V70 really, but they are so much more expensive, I'm more than happy to live with an S60 for now. The only problem I have is with getting mountain bikes in and out.
I didn't even know there was an Advanced User Mode
thanks
