New Winter Build - Associated RC12 R5 Pan Car

So browising one of my favourite Euro RC shops last week I came acros this Associated RC12R5 Team Edition Pan Car for not much more than £110,such a bargain I bought it!

There’s method in my madness, as my local RC Car Club runs 1/12 Pan Car races during the winter, so I thought why not.

My other 1/8 car build has stalled as parts are missing, so I started this on Sunday.

Well I have just loved putting this kit together, the beauty of the machined alloy and carbon parts and the attention to detail is just fantastic.

So much so that I did most of the remaining parts tonight and it’s almost finished.

Warning this thread is going to be picture heavy.

First parts to b built are the rear shock, steering links and suspension pushrods.

Next up is this beautiful carbon chassis and the rear suspension carrier.

Front suspension uprights were next, there are some very tiny parts here, needed my magnifying glass!

Another work of engineering art, carbon axle and alloy diff with carbide ball bearings!

Wheels on for the first time, I always feel like it’s becoming a real car/model when it first rolls on its own wheels!

These are Corally Carbon wheels with foam tyres.

Steering servo install next, and the first build issue, the servo saver included in the kit is for Airtonics ( Sanwa in the UK I think!), and the high speed metal geared Servo I bought is a different thread size!

More suspension finishing and motor install next.

Motor is another Corally 17 turns, and very nice looking motor too.

Not happy with the motor layout at this point, needs tweaking before mounting the ESC and setting the pinion and clearance.

Tomorrow I will work on the motor mounting position and the ESC location and wiring.

Should be interesting to see what the almost finished article is like!

That’s the one tool I don’t have in my collection, so to start with will run them as is, it’s only a cheapy set to start off with, to see what compound works best, I can’t recall what these are I think 30 shore?.

Also sorry for no more pic updates, the motor issue has stopped the build.

The motor is great and is mounted now, but I’ve realised the sensor cable to the brushless controller is too short, so need to order a longer one to get the ESC in the right position.

I’ve mmaged to get a new but cheap Spektrum receiver off eBay too, but only won it last night so it won’t be here for a few days I geuss.

Then it’s onto the dreaded painting of the body shell, the one thing I’ve never been good at, but will do my best to make,it look nice and. Bright!,

Glad you liked it enough to bookmark it, sorry I’ve not done any other updates, work and kids have got in the way!

That’s a good question, ie what’s a servo saver, but it really is as obvious as it sounds, it’s to save the servo, in the event of a crash.

As a lot of racing crashes are often front near side or off side corners at the front wheels, when traveling at over 50mph, the forces that hit the front wheels, Travel back up the steering arms directly into the servo, often stripping the gears.

That’s a bad thing of course, but perhaps more serious in the older servos that only had plastic gears, this one I have fittted has steel gears and a ball raced output shaft so should be stronger.

The servo saver is mounted on the servo output shaft, and has a coiled spring inside it, which allows it to “ absorb “ the shock of a crash, hopefully saving servo.

Yes I got the car and most of the bits from t2shop.de

They have some very good offers on stuff that’s not always the latest and greatest but perfectly good for me as a hobby racer.

The stuff on offer normally sells pretty quickly though.

Just a warning, nearly every time I refresh their page they have an offer which takes my fancy!

It gets very expensive!

Fabulous, the Kyosho Plazma looks a very similar design to my RC12R5, the rear suspension arms etc look almost identical, enjoy the build, and I look forwards to seeing some pictures too!
