I have been out of the world of RC cars for some years and having a quick look around the old names (like Kyosho) don't seem to be around quite so much although they still do the MP777.

So my question is - how competitive is this model these days - are there cheaper/better models available?

managed to pop down to the local club today who had a big meeting on today - very interesting indeed - I think a purchase is imminent!

I know what you mean - it seems you could easily spend £1K getting started!

I think I will go down the second hand route for a while and see how I get on, £1K is a lot to spend to find out I am a crap driver :-)

£1k is about the starting point if you are going racing with Nitro having a slightly lower entry than electric. Second hand is good if you can find something that hasn't been hammered... easy to buy something that will just break every time out.
A very good point, but if the person selling os a reasonable driver and services the car regularly then surely the risk is lower (I have a specific one in mind) - the base models seem to be an awful lot stronger than last time I was around the scene!

decided on a second hand (but not used much) Losi 8ight with DX2 to get things started - not sure if I am more worried things work out or not - as everyone keeps saying this seems to be a very expensive hobby!

Got everything rebuilt and had a first go on the track, first three laps went ok, but managed to crash on the fourth and lost a front wheel.

Damage not too bad, but I now realise why this hobby is so expensive, went online to order new bits, cost around £10, but actually spent another £60 on various hop-ups!
