Get your eyes on the selectors where they enter the gearbox/rods under the car while someone is trying to engage 1st/2nd & you may be able to see what it is, they are normally fiddly to get at but entirely do-able DIY.

I have a similar car it is also 2012, and has 102,200 on the clock, it is used for teaching, it has a hard life. 1st and 2nd gear have to be selected with soft hands and it always goes in otherwise it is very "Notchy".
If yours is really difficult then like above it needs to be looked at
Reverse is best done "swiftly" to get through both the gates.....I personally think it is a poor design.
